CANADIAN RACER

JEFF PAPPONE
Globe and Mail Update
There’s no doubt that Canadian racer J.R. Fitzpatrick’s first NASCAR Nationwide race of the year didn’t go according to plan.
He squeaked into the field after qualifying 40th for the mid-February season opening DRIVE4COPD 300 and then left the Daytona International Speedway completely frustrated after his car broke down 10 laps into the race. He ended the day classified second-last in 42nd spot.
Not exactly the opening salvo he wanted in his part-time bid to convince NASCAR teams that he’s got the right stuff to get a regular gig in the top tier Sprint Cup.
But that’s all a distant memory after Toronto businessman Steve Meehan bought Fitzpatrick’s Baker Curb Racing Nationwide team in a deal that closed following the Mar. 19 race in Bristol, Tenn. Now the Cambridge, Ont., racer is a key element in a planned all-Canadian NASCAR outfit that promises to take him to the Sprint Cup.

****two cols maximum****
John Ryan Fitzpatrick (born May 9, 1988 in Cambridge, Ontario) is a Canadian stock car driver. He is currently the youngest driver to win the CASCAR Super Series championship. He drives the #84 Schick Chevy for his father in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.
J.R. Fitzpatrick
Certainly Fitzpatrick still needs to perform, but the team’s new ownership has got him pumped.
“I think it’s fantastic. Steve is a really good guy, he’s Canadian and he really wants to see Canadian corporate sponsorship and Canadian drivers, so I mean it’s really cool,” Fitzpatrick said.
“He really believes in me and that’s what I really like. Given that I do need the experience and the time at the tracks and, even if it can’t be a full year, he is definitely going to push my career along and I am glad to be a part of it.”
With NASCAR’s exposure and huge popularity, the team should be attractive to Canadian companies who want to use the series to promote themselves in this country and in the U.S., as well as companies from south of the border looking to get their names known in Canada.
But with the ink still fresh, Meehan will back the effort mostly with his “love for racing” until the business development part of the plan gets going and the team starts attracting sponsorship.
Although plans haven’t been completely finalized, the short-term goal is to run a limited schedule in 2011 with a long-term objective of getting into the top tier Cup Series by 2013.
“We will run primarily in Nationwide and likely a few Cup races in 2011 — I think J.R. is comfortable running the road courses in Cup and with a little bit more experience and practice I think he could run an oval or two in Cup,” said Meehan, 46, founder of the Investment Planning Counsel, which was acquired by IGM Financial in 2004 for $95 million in a cash and stock deal.
“Our focus is to quickly evolve to a full-time Cup team and I think J.R. is sufficiently talented to get there with the right people behind him.”
The 23-year-old racer has shown great potential in his stock car career after becoming the youngest CASCAR champion (now the NASCAR Canadian Tires Series) at 18 in 2006. He was runner up in the Canadian Tire series last year.
Fitzpatrick has raced nine times in Nationwide since 2007, with seven of those starts coming on road courses. He also has 13 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts under his belt.
Making the jump from Canada’s stock car series to Nationwide isn’t easy, especially since the cars, engines, tires and tracks are all completely different. The biggest adjustment is the speed in Nationwide, which at the larger NASCAR ovals can be as much as 160 kilometres per hour quicker than Canadian Tire tracks.
On the other hand, he gets to race Ford’s Mustang Nationwide car introduced last season, something that’s just plain cool, he insisted.
“The Mustangs and the [Dodge] Challengers look awesome. The Chevy looks good too,” he said. “I really like the fact that NASCAR brought these cars in because I can actually sit in them – I’m six-four, so it’s really hard for me to get in the old-style car – and they just look wicked, a lot of people like them and I just love them.”
He's also getting the hang of driving them, too.
Although things didn’t go well in Daytona, Fitzpatrick’s second Nationwide race of 2011 was a bit more satisfying. He qualified 25th for last weekend’s race at California’s Auto Club Speedway and then drove to a 20th-place in Saturday's Royal Purple 300.
“We went there with a set-up that really didn’t suit my style and I was happy to come out of there with a top-20 with the way the car was handling. I’m a very competitive person, Steve is too and so is the whole team, so we were happy but we’re not happy if you know what I mean,” Fitzpatrick said.
“I wanted a top-15 finish and that would have been like a win to me but I didn’t quite get my goal.”
Originally, he was slated to race April 8 in Texas, but the change in ownership has the team regrouping and instead planning to hit the stop three weeks away in Nashville.
While Fitzpatrick continues to champ at the bit for his next race, Meehan hopes Nashville is just the start of something bigger.
“We have an opportunity to represent a country as opposed to just being a team and I’m excited by the prospect of doing that,” Meehan said.
“It’s a feel good story and it’s my job to capture it and sell it to corporate Canada.”

Bubba Stewart apologizes after arrest

Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Motocross and Supercross star James "Bubba" Stewart says he wants to show people that "I am someone that upholds the law" and also apologized to his fans following his arrest for impersonating a police officer.
Stewart released a statement Wednesday, addressing for the first time his Monday night arrest for using red and blue lights to pull over a vehicle that contained two off-duty troopers.
Stewart and his passenger, Quinault Jehrrod, were both charged with felonies in the incident. Stewart was charged with impersonating an officer and Jehrrod with tampering with evidence after trying to hide the lights in a backpack. Both men were released on cash bonds.
The statement says that Stewart is free to race this weekend in a Supercross event in Arlington, Texas.

Raikkonen looking into racing in NASCAR

Lee Spencer
Lee Spencer is the senior NASCAR writer for FOXSports.com

Don’t adjust your computer screen, the Kimi Raikkonen rumor to race in NASCAR is not an early April Fools prank.

Raikkonen, the 2007 Formula One champion, has made sincere inquiries with several teams. According to those familiar with the situation, Raikkonen would run in the Camping World Truck Series with aspirations of competing in Sprint Cup by the end of the season.

On Tuesday, news broke from Turun Sanomat in Finland that Raikkonen would make his stock car debut this summer and continue racing World Rally Championship cars as well. The story mentioned a partnership with former NASCAR team owner Foster Gillett in a collaboration named ICE1 Racing.

Gillett accompanied Raikkonen at Homestead last November before his family parted ways with Richard Petty Motorsports. One owner who had been approached by the team said he was offered $450,000 per race for five races including Martinsville, Daytona, Homestead and both road courses (Sonoma and Watkins Glen).

NASCAR senior vice president Steve O’Donnell confirmed on Twitter Tuesday evening that Raikkonen “has definitely sent in app to drive” but car and ownership details were “unknown." While there have been inquiries to many teams, sources say discussions have yet to reach the manufacturer level.

Raikkonnen, 31, competed in F1 from 2001 to 2009. He posted 18 victories and 62 podium appearances.

Gibbs working to identify cause of engine problems

Joe Gibbs Racing officials are scrambling to uncover the cause of an unusually high number of engine issues during the first five races of the Sprint Cup season. JGR had two issues this past weekend at Auto Club Speedway in California. The engine in #20-Joey Logano's Toyota had to be replaced on Saturday when valve leakage was discovered following the final practice. #11-Denny Hamlin's engine failed 105 laps into the race due to an unrelated value train issue. In all, JGR has had three engine failures in races and three more engines replaced prior to a race because problems arose. Last season, the organization had only two DNFs due to engine failure between Hamlin, Logano and #18-Kyle Busch. "Is there concern? Of course," said Jimmy Makar, JGR's senior vice president of race operations. "We've had a lot more issues than we'd like to see, this early in the season especially. Probably the bigger issue is for the most part they are non-related. That makes things harder to figure out. If you had the same thing happening over and over again you could focus on it." Makar said only Hamlin's failure on Sunday showed signs of a potential bad part. More alarming, Makar said there were very few changes made to the engines during the offseason. He said the organization purposely left things the way they were, with minor adjustments to improve fuel mileage that may have cost Hamlin the championship last season, before experimenting with new ideas.

A true story!

2011 at Saratoga Speedway

Submitted by Terry Guest

It was 30 years ago when the first race was raced at Saratoga Speedway, and the upcoming 2011 season will continue the legacy of Saratoga Speedway.

Last year's 2010 season saw the progression of many young drivers and the growing popularity in all of our classes. The upcoming 2011 season will see many new faces and many previous champions trying to retain their titles. This year will see all of our last year's classes returning, except for the figure 8 cars, due to lack of interest. These classes are: Hornet cars, Bomber cars, Crash to Pass cars, Roadrunners, Dwarf cars, IMCA Modifieds, Island Mini Stocks, Old Time Modified Stock Cars (O.T.R.A), Wilroc Sprint Cars and the Wilroc Lite cars. The 2011 will also see the return of Motorcycle class, and the newly formed ASA BC Late Model Tour, which was previously called the Katana Sportsman Tour. Our Hornet car class will have some minor rule changes for the upcoming season. First of, the hornet class will not be split, however, we will award an 'A' division championship and a 'B" division championship. The 'A' division will function based on our normal points model, the 'B' championship will be based on 'B' Main event finishes, as well as heats and qualifying. Another new rule change will be that drivers may choose the colour of their car, but you cannot have any solid dark colours (black, brown, dark blue etc.).

The new year will feature 23 different race nights at the Black Creek oval in the upcoming season. Every night at Saratoga is a special night, but we have some very special race nights on our schedule.

May 7th will be our opening night with the always amazing fireworks extravaganza, accompanied by the Crash to Pass cars, Hornet Cars and the Roadrunners.

May 21st and 22nd will mark our first Monster Truck show of the year, with Crash to Pass cars, Hornets, Bomber cars, Roadrunners and the return of the Tough Trucks.

June 25th will be the first showing of the fastest class on the island; the Wilroc Sprint cars, along with the Wilroc Lites and the IMCA Modifieds.

Returning this season are the speedway motorcycles after a years absence, and to help create more interest in this very challenging style of oval track racing, there will be a racing clinic this Saturday from 11am until 4pm with a cost of $50 per person with more information available at Speedway Road Racers which includes contact names and a clinic registration form.

July 2nd will feature are first ever “Eve of Destruction” which will include a Limo jump, the jet dragster funny car, Fireworks, IMCA Modifieds, Dwarf Cars, and Bomber Cars.

July 9th is our first Boat Race of the year and our only car tossing competition of the year, these two main features will be accompanied by the Crash to Pass cars, Roadrunners and the Hornet cars.

Next up on July 16th is our 150 lap ASA BC Late Model Tour race, which is our longest race of the year. This special night will also include the Bomber cars and the Island Mini Stocks.

July 30th and 31st is our last Monster Truck show of the year, along with the Crash to Pass cars, Bombers, Hornets, Roadrunners and Tough Trucks.

August 6th is our last show of the Wilroc Sprint cars. The sprint cars will be accompanied by the Wilroc Lites, Dwarf cars, and the IMCA Modifieds.

August 20th marks our third annual Bikini Contest and our last Boat race of the year. Also on this night will be Crash to Pass cars, Roadrunners and Hornets.

September 3rd and 4th is our very popular Canadian-American Demolition Derby. Alongside these “maniacs” will by our Hornet cars, Crash to Pass cars, and our Roadrunners.

September 17th marks the last race night of the 2011 season, with our spectacular Fireworks show, Crash to Pass cars, Roadrunners and Hornets.

For more information on our race nights please visit the Saratoga Speedway website and mark your calendars for all of these special race nights! The 2011 season will once again be another exciting season, with many new faces and many new memories. Make sure to watch out for all of our past season champions as they make another run to capture their previous championships!  The first pre-season practice for all classes will be held this Saturday beginning at 5pm and is open to the public with no admission charge giving the race fans a chance to see the cars that will make up the 2011 season.

Hubbard’s Win 8 Hour Enduro at Evergreen Speedway

March 27, 2011 by Racey
Speedway News

Monroe, WA (March 27, 2011): The father son team of Mark and Cullen Hubbard (Seattle) won the first annual Interstate Batteries Built Tough 8 Hour Enduro at Evergreen Speedway on Sunday March 27th. Forty-Two cars started the long endurance race at 10am and 26 finished eight hours later at 6pm. Second place went to another father son team of Troy and Brett Fetzer (Everett) on son Brett’s 21st birthday. Finishing third was the family team of Donald and Bruce Hall (Issaquah, Maple Valley).
The Hubbard team was down over four laps to the leaders. Attrition and driver changes caused the other leading teams to relinquish the lead to the Hubbard’s with over 2.5 hours remaining. When asked if they knew they were leading, Mark stated, “we heard we were up by three laps so when the Fetzer team passed us a few times I raced like crazy at the end.” The Hubbard’s won the race by six laps and the $4,000.00 winner’s check.
Up next at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday April 2nd is the season opener on the giant 5/8 mile oval. Returning are the fastest group of cars ever to race on the ‘Super Speedway of the West’, the ASA (American Speed Association) NSRA (Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association) and their first time at Evergreen Speedway the Trick Racing Gasoline Super Late Model 125. Racing starts at 6pm.

Kevin Harvick Thrills Fans with California Win

Kevin Harvick led only one lap of Sunday's Auto Club 400, the all important final lap. Harvick made a thrilling last-lap pass of Jimmie Johnson to claim his 15th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory.  "We led the right one, that's for sure," said Harvick.

Much of the race was a sleeper with Kyle Busch leading 151 laps of the 200-lap race. Jimmie Johnson moved into second with 20 laps remaining and began to challenge Busch until Bobby Labonte brought out the caution on lap 185. The top-seven cars did not pit and held the same running order when the race restarted on lap 192.

Everything heated up when Johnson got by Kyle Busch for the lead on lap 197 with Harvick in tow. Harvick, glued to the rear bumper of Johnson's car, bumped Johnson on the backstretch before making the race-winning move in turn three heading to the checkered flag.

"When they started racing side by side, we made up the ground," explained Harvick. "Kyle started to get loose and we drove around him. Everything worked out going into turn three and four, it was a good day for us."

Harvick won by a margin of 0.14 seconds over Johnson with Busch third, Matt Kenseth fourth and Ryan Newman fifth.

Carl Edwards leads the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings as the series heads to Martinsville next Sunday.

Harvick wins the Auto Club 400 with a last lap pass

March 27, 2011 by SM Staff

Patrick McBride
Kevin Harvick led one lap in Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway and it was the most important one, the last one.
Harvick passed Jimmie Johnson on the final turn to win his first race of the season and the 15th of his Sprint Cup career.
“You know those guys (Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson) started racing and they got side-by-side and we were able to pull up in there. The more cycles that got on our tires, the better off we were. But I was really nervous about that last call staying out but it all worked out in our favor and we were able to make up ground.” Harvick said.
Kyle Busch dominated the race by leading a race-high of 151 laps but he didn’t have the car after a late caution flag.
“It’s just we give it up, you know. We gave the race away today, unfortunately. We seem to be losing the handle a little bit two runs from the end and especially that last set of tires.” Busch said.
Johnson passed Busch for the lead with three laps remaining. But Harvick was right behind both drivers just waiting to make his move. Harvick also passed Busch and pulled right up on Johnson’s bumper, setting up his last lap pass for the win.
“It reminded me of last year in the Spring race, you know. Just didn’t hold him off that time. Those tires made the difference. I knew he was coming, they said he was coming. If I could have got by the No. 18 maybe a lap sooner that might have been enough to give him the margin I needed. Just way loose. I was driving my butt off just trying to keep this Lowe’s Chevrolet up front but it didn’t pan out.” Johnson said.
Denny Hamlin led 15 laps before having engine problems and eventually went out of the race. Joey Logano also had engine problems and had to switch engines before Sunday’s race. Joe Gibbs Racing has had engine problems in all five races this season.
Busch finished third, Matt Kenseth fourth and Ryan Newman finished fifth.
“It is a good day for us. You are always greedy and want more. I was the first guy on tires and I didn’t do probably as good a job as I needed to on the restart. It just took awhile to get there.” Kenseth said.
“We had some bad pit stops and they we under green fortunately at least one time I should say for sure I shouldn’t say two. Tony Gibson made a great call staying out. Just really proud of the U.S. Army Chevrolet and everybody at Stewart-Hass Racing giving us the opportunity.” Newman said.

JASON BLONDE - NEW WORLD RECORD BRISTOL MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Submitted by Mark Vaselenak, RCP
Written by MSR Admin

Bristol, TN — Jason Blonde was the fastest of the fast Saturday afternoon at Bristol Motor Speedway as he established a new world record during the World’s Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials.

Blonde, driving a Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series sprint car, clicked off a blistering lap of 144.871 mph in 13.245 seconds, shattering the previous track record of 138.442 mph in 13.860 seconds set by Sammy Swindell in June of 2000 at BMS during a World of Outlaws event.

Blonde hit the front stretch wall on his first attempt causing major damage, however, his outstanding crew, with the help of old friend and NASCAR crew member Jerry Kelly, were able to make repairs just in time as the one hour event time expired. The fans were on the edge of their seats as Jason returned to the track setting the record on the very last lap of the event.

“That last time out, I held my breath for two whole laps around this place. I just flat-footed it all the way around. I knew it was fast, but I didn’t know how fast. It was pretty great to find out that we had set the new world record. That’s pretty amazing.” said Blonde. “ I want to thank my car owners Don and Suellen Wilshe of BioBased US, my crew, American Racer for a great tire and Must See Racing, where the fans can see us race” he continued.

Mike Lichty set a new half-mile Supermodified world record with a lap of 144.634 mph in 13.267 seconds.

Sprint Cup driver David Ragan piloted his Ford Mustang GT 5.0 to a lap of 98.497 mph at 19.481 seconds, a world record
for a passenger car.

Scott Russell and his Yamaha took on the World’s Fastest Half-Mile and set a half-mile closed course record for a Superbike with a run of 97.990 mph, which he covered in 19.582 seconds.

Others participating in the World’s Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials were USAC Sprint Car driver Bryan Clauson and ISMA Supermodified driver Brad Noffsinger.

“Jason, his wife Jenny and his team are first class people and great competitors, all of us at Must See racing couldn't be more happy and proud of them. They just set a very significant record with no trick parts or set up in a MSRXSS rule compliant race car using our new American Racer tires.” said MSR president Jim Hanks.

Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series sponsors BioBased US, Engine Pro, TruFuel, Royal Oak Charcoal, and Turtle Wax are proud of Jason Blonde, his team’s outstanding effort and his Bristol Motor Speedway world record.

Size of Plate Openings Getting Smaller

Reid Spencer,  Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service

The diameter of holes in the plates will measure 7/8 inches, down 1/64 inches from the openings in plates used in the Feb. 20 season-opening Daytona 500. NASCAR confirmed the change, indicating that the plate size at Talladega often is smaller than at Daytona, given that Talladega is a slightly longer track (2.66 miles versus 2.5 miles).
However, the plate size for this year's Aaron's 499 is 4/64 inches smaller than that used for the past two races at Talladega, a tacit acknowledgement on NASCAR's part that Cup teams have gotten a better handle on their setups and cooling systems.
No changes have been made to the cooling system requirements and 60-square-inch maximum radiator air inlet opening (3x20 inches) used for the Daytona 500, NASCAR spokesperson Kerry Tharp said.
Over the course of Speedweeks at Daytona, NASCAR made several rule changes designed to slow the Cup cars, which reached speeds in excess of 206 mph during the Feb. 12 Budweiser Shootout. NASCAR also attempted to lessen the effectiveness of two-car drafts, which were commonplace at Daytona, by lowering the threshold of pressure relief valves in the cooling systems and shrinking grille openings.
Those measures had little effect with respect to the two-car hookups, which were the order of the day in the Daytona 500, won by Trevor Bayne.

Brandon Carlson Wins Enduro Finale

Contrary to past events, only twelve drivers took the track for the finale in the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Enduro race held this afternoon at Western Speedway. On a cool but sunny afternoon some stellar drivers put on quite a show as Rory Smith, Late Model Champion, came out as did four time winner Cody Aumen, Darren Yates, a WilRoc Sprint Car Champion at Saratoga, Howie Mace, a consistent front runner and also a winner in this Series, plus an eight year old Taylor Orr driving the #09 car.

Glen Rand held the pole and got off first and led for the first four laps until Smith went by for the lead on lap five and quickly followed by Brandon Carlson who raced into second spot two laps later. On lap nine Alex Atkinson moved into third and Rand going backwards with Mace running fourth on lap ten while Aumen moved up to fifth on lap twelve. On lap nineteen, Aumen moved up to run fourth and Yates moved up to the fifth position one lap later. Up front, Smith held a rather large lead running around almost unchallenged as behind him, Carlson, Atkinson, Yates, and Aumen ran bumper to bumper lap after lap. On lap thirty-one, Aumen regained the fourth spot and Mace also got by Yates to reclaim the fifth spot dropping Yates back to sixth by lap thirty-four. On lap forty-two, Atkinson, who had a great run in third, entered the pits, his day ended. For the next seventeen laps, the battle for second, third, fourth, and fifth was as hot as ever and on lap sixty, disaster struck for Rory Smith as his car entered the pits on the hook with his good run at an end. Carlson assumed the lead with Aumen hot on his bumper, Yates all over him running third, Mace in the thick of things running fourth and Brenda Lesley now running fifth. On lap eighty-one, Aumen entered the pits surrendering second spot to Yates but he was able to return to action only losing one position. On lap ninety there was some contact between Yates and Aumen forcing Yates to enter the pits for some repairs. He managed to return to the track one lap later and running in fifth. On lap one hundred and two Mace passed Aumen and took over the second spot dropping Aumen back to third. On lap one hundred nine, Yates passed Lesley ro regain the fourth spot and into the mix with Carlson, Mace, and Aumen. On lap one hundred twenty-five, luck also ran out on Aumen as his car quit and his day was done.

Brandon Carlson ran seventy-three laps out front and not one lap was easy as he was challenged by several different drivers and there was some contact on a couple of occasions but not enough to knock him off the point. Only one other driver remained on the same lap, that being Howie Mace who has made a practice of top finishes in the winter series. This marked the end of the 2010 / 2011 Enduro season with Carlson winning this event followed by Mace, Yates, Lesley, and Kevin Knight rounding out the top five positions.

Mark your calendars as April 2nd, regular Saturday night racing returns to Western Speedway with the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, and the Bombers all begin the action for the 2011 season. On this night last season's Champions will receive their Championship trophies for these classes for 2010. Come out and congratulate each and every one of them. Heath Cooper - Demo Trucks, Marc Parkinson - Demo Cars, Brandon Young - Figure 8s, Brandon Steen - Bombers, and Larry Manson - Mini Vans. See you there.

NASCAR BRISTOL SUNDAY

Tempers, Tempers: Bristol Leaves Many Steamed Following First Short Track Race

Published on March 20, 2011 by Kelly Crandall

When racing at the Bristol Motor Speedway it would be a benefit to forget about having feelings, because they’re going to get hurt.
Barry Albert
Saturday and Sunday afternoon there was a lot of frustration to go around. Before the green flag even flew for the Scotts EZ Seed 300  Nationwide Series race there was  drama. Jennifer Jo Cobb walked away from her No. 79 car after what she said was being told by her team owner to to start and park.
He was trying to break a contract he had with her Cobb said.
“I have a commitment to my sponsors, my fans, and NASCAR that I won’t start and park,” Cobb said. “I’m very serious about my career and my performance, and I’ve worked hard to prove it to everyone. I had already bought tires for the race, so you can imagine that this was a blow to my principles and my finances to get this news.”
Team owner Rick Russell had a different version.
“I already had my entry in for Bristol and California, and we killed our car in Vegas in a wreck,” said Russell. “So only having one car, I got the thing rebuilt and we brought it up here with the intentions of staying out of trouble and running a few laps and going home with the car in one piece, so we could race next week in California.”
Russell said Cobb and crew chief Steve Kuykendall went behind his back to put together a pit crew for the race. He also said that after the car was parked some members were trying to take parts off. He then said he wanted a sheriff deputy to come and for NASCAR to stop them.
The incident has become a she-said/he-said incident. It spilled over to the  social networking sites as comments from 2nd Chance Racing on their Twitter and Facebook page weren’t well received with fans. In turn, fans shot back with their support for Cobb and for their dislike of starting and parking.
A few hours later it was another female that was none to happy, Danica Patrick.
Making her first career start at the Tennessee bullring, Patrick was 53 laps away from leaving with a top 20 finish. Bristol was her final NASCAR race for a few months as she returns to INDYCAR next weekend.
While racing another rookie, Ryan Truex, on the front stretch, the two made contact. Patrick went spinning and ended up head on into the wall, ending her day. As Truex drove by Patrick stood with her arms extended, as if asking what that was all about.
She said he was just racing too hard. On the Truex radio he took the blame but was told by his team that apparently Patrick has never done anything wrong in her life.
On Sunday afternoon it was a whole new ballgame.
Jamie McMurray was wondering if Clint Bowyer was missing an important team member.  Kevin Harvick had unpleasant comments about Mark Martin. Jeff Gordon wanted Brad Keselowski to know how he felt about him running into the side of the No. 24.
It’s Bristol baby!
When the No. 4 of Kasey Kahne got loose coming off turn two he caused Harvick to get into the back of him as well as check up. Harvick was then hit by Martin. Harvick tried to save it but spun and was forced to pit for repairs to his rear bumper.
“That’s two times in four races,” said Harvick over the radio. “They need to check his old ass for vision.”
A few laps later Martin caused another caution by spinning Travis Kvapil.
During the caution for Harvick’s spin turn three has Juan Pablo Montoya, Trevor Bayne and others experience their own problems in. Bowyer never slowed down enough to avoid running into the back of a slowing Jamie McMurray.
“Who did that?” McMurray asked and then told of Bowyer. “Does he have a spotter?”
Manners go out the window racing at Bristol. It’s flat out, bumper to bumper, hard nosed racing at over 100 mph. Sometimes, things aren’t going to go a drivers way. It’s rare to leave the track with the race car in one piece or with only a few dents and dings. Unless that driver is lucky enough to be the winner.
None of the following drivers felt like winners after Sunday.
Robby Gordon told his team “this is stupid” after wrecking his No. 7 and having to head to the garage. And Kurt Busch made sure to use every expletive in the book when talking about his No. 22. Never satisfied with how is car was handling, Busch let loose on his radio nearly the whole race.
It was also reported that after the race was over and everyone had returned to the garage, Busch was still upset.
Joey Logano also had a few words for his team and the engine under the hood of his No. 20 Home Depot Toyota.
“This motor still f***ing sucks,” he said early in the race. Logano was able to battle back for a 23rd place finish but leaving Bristol, Joe Gibbs Racing still must be concerned with their engine department. They’ve experienced problems in every race thus far in the 2011 season.
Even normally mild-mannered Jimmie Johnson had a few exciting moments. While leading he tapped Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne whom he was trying to lap. During another run he was attempting to lap the 38 of Kvapil and again found himself having trouble.
“Must be taking lessons from Ryan Newman,” his spotter Earl Barban told him.
Johnson led the most laps and finished third. Next weekend the NSCS heads to his home track, Auto Club Speedway. The track out West is far from a short track like Bristol and drivers most likely won’t lose their cool. It won’t last long though as another short track, Martinsville looms in two weeks.
Bristol though, was the first short track of the year.
The Jeff Byrd 500 was one that some will say lived up to its expectations and provided plenty to talk about heading into a Monday morning. Something the late Byrd himself would have been proud of.
