Schuurman And Smith Win Features - Western Speedway

By Ken Keating

Western Speedway hosted the second Wednesday Night Fever event with the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Hornet Series this evening and again it proved to be very competitive. Five Trophy Dashes, twelve Heat races, and two Feature events filled the nights program with very close racing.

Laura-Ashley Grant and Richard Chuck had great nights as both racers won the Dash events and two Heat races apiece in their respective races. Garret Smith, Paris Smith, and Chris Davis were the other Trophy Dash winners while Karl Parker, Rory Smith, driving for Steve Copp, Rhett Smith, and Cam Stanfield won the Expert Heat races with Devin Fourneir, Chris Davis, and Glenn Rand winning two of his Heat races in the Rookie Division.

Cassandra Musfelt returned to Bumblebee racing and shared the front row with Ken Plante for the start of the Rookies Feature event scheduled for twenty-five laps. She quickly got the advantage followed by Ian Walker while several drivers battled for the next positions behind them. On lap five, Laura-Ashley Grant finally got through traffic and took over the third spot and then moved to second two laps later dropping Walker to third. Two cars got into the side of Cole Schuurman going into turn one forcing him sideways but he was able to hold on and only losing a couple of spots. As Laura-Ashley was going for the lead on the outside, Glenn Rand went to the inside and took the second spot away on lap eleven dropping Ashley Grant back to third. Rand moved to the outside of Musfelt for the lead and made the pass complete on lap fourteen while behind the new leader, things were still hot for the next positions between, Musfelt, Grant, and Schuurman. On lap eighteen, Schuurman took over the second spot dropping Musfelt back to third while Jay Young moved into contention taking the fourth spot. Over the next few laps the frontrunners made it interesting exchanging the lead back and forth. On the very last lap, Schuurman grabbed the lead and went on to the win followed by Rand, Young, Chris Davis, and Brenda Leslie rounding out the top five positions in a great race. Brenda Leslie was the top finishing Bumblebee on the night.

Matt Schultz and Rocky Sandhu brought twelve cars to the green flag for the start of the Experts Feature event with Schultz leading the first lap and losing that to Richard Shuck on lap two. Several drivers were trading positions behind him until Graham Schuurman took the second spot on lap five and followed by Garrett Smith one lap later.

These three drivers were in a tight battle until Schuurman took the lead on lap thirteen while Smith moved to second dropping Shuck back to third one lap later. On lap seventeen, Ryan Smith moved up to the third spot while Cam Stanfield also got into the mix two laps later. Over the next several laps the top four drivers ran bumper to bumper weaving through traffic but always on each others tail. On lap thirty, the very last lap, Smith won a drag race and took the chequered flag for the win followed by Schuurman, Stanfield, Rhett Smith and Shuck rounding out the top five positions. This race was also highly contested and came down to the last few feet to decide a winner much like the Rookie Division.

The next race in the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Hornet Series is scheduled for July 6th. The next Saturday race will feature the I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks, the WilRoc Lites, and the highly competitive Stock Car Series on July 2nd.

NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Ready For Summer Stretch

Competitors Ready For Toronto, Montreal And All Points In Between

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 30, 2011) – As the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season hits its stride, competitors in the series are beginning to as well, both at home and at other NASCAR-sanctioned events across North America.

With four of the 12 events on the 2011 slate in the books drivers and teams have worked out the kinks and are ready for the summer stretch that has five races covering four Canadian provinces – British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan – from July 9 to August 20.

The early portion of the schedule has seen Milverton, Ontario’s Scott Steckly jump out to the early lead in the championship point standings, but J.R. Fitzpatrick, D.J. Kennington and Don Thomson Jr. are in hot pursuit.

The stage is now set for the Streets of Toronto 100 on July 9 at Toronto’s Exhibition Place as part of the Honda Indy Toronto event. Over 30 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series cars are expected to be on hand. Rivals Fitzpatrick and Andrew Ranger, who won last season’s Toronto race, once again square off, but they must not lose sight of Steckly, Kennington and Jason Bowles. Bowles, the 2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion and winner of the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, battled Ranger for the win last year at Montreal.

“The (Honda Indy Toronto) is definitely a big event for all of us,” said Fitzpatrick. “It’s a big stage and everyone wants to put on a great show for the fans.”

The 23-year-old Fitzpatrick, out of Ayr, Ont., has yet to find his way to Victory Lane in 2011, but he has led laps in all four races and has posted a pair of top-five and four top-10 finishes. The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is just part of Fitzpatrick’s racing duties this season. He is the driver of the new No. 67 Go Canada Racing Ford in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

The day before he finished as runner-up to Kennington at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont., on June 26, he posted a 10th-place finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc.

The June 25 event at Road America proved to be a landmark day for north-of-the-border drivers. Canadian racing legends Ron Fellows and Jacques Villeneuve finished second and third, respectively, while two-time NASCAR Canadian Tire Series champion Andrew Ranger finished sixth followed by Fitzpatrick in 10th. It was best showing in one of NASCAR’s top-three series since three Canadians placed in the top 10 at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in August 2009.

After Toronto, the series heads to Western Canada for events at Motoplex Speedway and Event Park in Vernon, B.C., and Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in Saskatoon, Sask. The two oval-track events have been held in front of capacity crowds for the past two seasons.

Then the teams travel to Quebec for the final two road-course events of the season – August 7 at Circuit de Trois-Rivieres for the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres and August 20 at Montreal’s legendary Circuit Gilles Villeneuve at which they will share the date with the NASCAR Nationwide Series for the fifth straight season. Each of these events features tremendous crowds and spectacular racing. Ranger has wins in Montreal in 2008 and 2010 separated by a Fitzpatrick victory in 2009. Ranger also looks to continue his mastery at Trois-Rivieres where he has won three straight seasons.

“The opportunity to share the track in Montreal with the (NASCAR Nationwide Series) is always a lot of fun,” said defending NASCAR Canadian Series champion Kennington. “And Trois-Rivieres always has a great crowd. Race fans in Quebec may be the best of anywhere.”

So far this season, Steckly has logged top-five finishes in each of the four events, so far, including a win in the season opener on May 28 at Mosport Speedway in Bowmanville, Ont. Thomson earned the win on June 11 at Delaware (Ont.) Speedway. Kennington collected his 10th series career win on June 26 at Mosport International Raceway, which will be a memorable one for the driver out of St. Thomas, Ont. It was his first series win on a road course and done in dramatic fashion as he went from third to first in the final two laps of the race.

The remaining win went to road-course ace Robin Buck at the series’ inaugural visit to Circuit ICAR, a 2.113-mile road course on the grounds of the Mirabel (Que.) Airport.
By the time the summer stretch is complete, the already tight championship battle surely will have closed up even more, as the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will crown its fifth champion on Sept. 24 at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, Ont.

COMING UP THIS WEEKEND

The Southern California Toyota Dealers 200 presented by King Taco on Saturday at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) will mark the seventh race of the 2011 season for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

MATT HEIN WINS THE RORY PRICE MEMORIAL

ASA/NSRA

MATT HEIN WINS THE RORY PRICE MEMORIAL IN SPECTACULAR FASHION CLAIMING THE SEASON POINTS LEAD
Matt Hein and Sierra Jackson left the two race Diamond Cup at Meridian Speedway tied in early season points. Andy Alberding was just eight points behind the leader with Jeff Montgomery only twenty points down from Hein and Jackson. Hein would have a stellar night, while Alberding and Jackson would both have good nights. Only Montgomery would have a dismal race leaving the track after just four laps with continuing overheating problems.
Hein started the twenty car, thirty lap A Main in eighth position as a result of an eight-car invert. On the pole was #17 Justin Mack followed by #23 Darren Spiers, #3 Robert Beck, #76 Andy Alberding, #25j Sierra Jackson, #33j Jeff Montgomery, #14 Matt Mansell all ahead of Hein. Behind him were #5 Reece Goetz, #22 Shawn Rice, #4 Greg Middendorf, #97s Brian Smith, #15r Vern Scevers, #91 Bryan Warf, #44 Todd Coleman, #94 Merv Bursello, #2 Ron Larson, #33 Mitch Holte, #16 TJ Munro, and #65 Kevin Burck. Before the green fell Munro left the track with smoke trailing, later to be determined as leaking valve cover gaskets. With a now nineteen car field Mack jumped out to a commanding lead with a very good start on the green. Beck and Alberding quickly dispatched Spiers taking away second and third from him. Hein started his relentless move towards the front while Jackson was just holding her own in fifth. Goetz, a rookie in the pavement sprint cars as well as Evergreen Speedway was one to watch, the crowd having great expectations from him based on a commanding win in his heat race. Goetz stayed mired in ninth, temporarily dropping back to tenth before starting to move up in the field in the latter stages of the race. Within the first fifteen laps Beck had caught Mack and made a pass for first going into turn one. Beck had taken the lead down the backstretch but emerging from turn four was Mack again in the lead with Beck coasting on the inside of the track, his engine had just shut off. Beck’s car dead on the track brought out the only caution in the race. Reverting to the last green flag lap Mack was again the leader for the restart with Alberding second, Jackson third and Hein fourth. This year NSRA has opted for double file restarts with the leader choosing the inside or outside row. Mack chose the inside. Mack again got a great start keeping the lead over Alberding. Hein however, drove by Jackson to take over third coming off two. Within five laps Hein had passed Alberding for second and set his sights on Mack. Goetz had started moving forward from his tenth spot taking fourth away from Jackson who had a loose car coming off the turns. Burck had also found his car to his liking during the race moving all way up to eighth place from his last place starting position. Mansell had his left rear tire go on lap twenty-three down on the front stretch but he stayed low and limped his car to the pit entry on the backstretch without bringing out a caution. Hein and Mack were now locked in a battle for first with lapped traffic thrown in the mix. Hein did not get an opportunity to take the lead using lapped traffic as Mack caught the traffic at just the right places on the track to not block his progress. With Mack and Hein clear of lapped traffic the contest for first was again on. In turns three and four Hein made his move on the outside of Mack taking the lead on the front stretch as the white flag flew. Hein took the checkered flag leading just one lap of the thirty with Mack in second, then Alberding, Goetz, Jackson, Rice who had steadily worked his way from tenth to sixth, Scevers, Burke taking home the hard charger award for moving from nineteenth to eighth, Barcelow the last car on the lead lap, Coleman, Middendorf, Spiers, Larson, Holte, and Walker. The sixteenth place Warf, Mansell, Beck, and Montgomery had left the track before the checkered.
In a post race interview Matt Hein commented on his pass of Mack, “I just held my breath, stepped down on the throttle and went around him on the outside in 3 and 4.”
Heat one had the #16 of Munro on the pole but continual driveline issues for that team did not allow them to roll out for their heat. The revised starting grid had #94 Merv Barcelow on the pole, #92 Bryan Warf, #97s Axel Walker, #5 Reece Goetz, #3 Robert Beck, and #33j Jeff Montgomery. At the green Goetz drove around the outside of the three competitors ahead of him coming off turn 2 with the lead ! Warf took over 2nd place until his demise after 4 laps leaving the track because of abnormal engine noise and exhaust fumes in the drivers compartment. Warf’s issues were traced to a loose muffler. While Warf was on track he was losing time to Goetz, Warf trailing by a quarter lap after 4 laps. Montgomery had pulled into the pits after completing the first lap seeing 230 on his water temp gauge and choosing not to risk engine damage. During the course of the heat Beck moved into third passing first Walker then Barcelow. With Warf leaving the track after the 4th lap Beck then took over second but a half lap behind the leader. At the checkers Goetz convincingly won his first ever race in a pavement sprint car, followed by Beck, Barcelow and Walker.
Heat two started one car shy of the seven scheduled. The 25z car of Chris Schmelzle had withdrawn determining that earlier suspected fueling and timing issues were indeed a failing head gasket. Ron Larson in the #2 sat on the pole then the #44 of Todd Coleman, Greg Middendorf in the #4, Justin Mack #17, Andy Alberding #76, and Matt Mansell #14. At the green there was a tussle for the lead with Coleman, Middendorf, and Mack all interested in taking it from Larson. Emerging from turn two down the backstretch Larson maintained the lead as he would for the entire 8 laps with Coleman retaining second. The struggle became for third place with first Mack then Alberding getting around Middendorf by lap two then a lap later Mansell getting around Middendorf for fifth. That’s the way they finished; Larson, Coleman, Mack, Alberding, Mansell, and Middendorf.
Heat three had #33 Mitch Holte on the pole then #65 Kevin Burck, #15r Vern Scevers, #22 Shawn Rice, #23v Darren Spiers, #25j Sierra Jackson, and fast qualifier #98h Matt Hein. Within a half lap Holte had gone from the pole to seventh with first Burck passing in turn one, then Rice passing Burck down the backstretch with the rest of the field getting around Holte. Scevers had lost a spot in the passing of the first lap while Hein was steadily working his way forward from last place. Hein passed Burck by lap six and went to work attempting to catch the leader Rice. The white flag lap provided an opportunity for Hein to get around Rice due to Rice coming up on Holte to lap him. Rice caught Holte at the right place off of turn two easily passing him which did not provide Hein with the opportunity to take away first from Rice. The checkers caught Rice first followed by Hein, Burck, Scevers, Jackson, Spiers, and Holte.
The B Trophy Dash had the #91 of Bryan Warf on the pole, #65 Kevin Burck, #4 Greg Middendorf, and #97s Axel Walker. Warf held the lead through all four laps with Burck in second. Only 3rd was challenged with Walker trying to get around Middendorf on the backstretch on laps 2 and 3. At the finish Warf took the checkers followed by Burck, Middendorf, and Walker.
The A Trophy Dash saw the four quickest qualifiers including the two tied in early season points. On the pole was #25 Sierra Jackson, #33j Jeff Montgomery, #14 Matt Mansell, and #98h Matt Hein. With the green flag waving Montgomery drove around the outside of Mansell assuming the lead. Half way through the first lap Mansell had been shuffled from the pole to last place both Jackson and Hein driving around him. The order stayed the same at the checkered Jeff Montgomery in the #33j, Jackson finishing second, Hein settling for third and Mansell finishing fourth.
Twenty-one cars would take the green for qualifying. The fast qualifier, Matt Hein in the #98h clicked off a 19.055 second lap, second quick was Canadian Matt Mansell in the #14 with a lap time of 19.190. Third went to the #33j of Jeff Montgomery; 19.290, fourth #25j of Sierra Jackson; 19.303, fifth #76 Andy Alberding; 19.360, sixth #3 Robert Beck19.451, seventh #23v Darren Spiers; 19.680, eighth #17 Justin Mack; 19.806, ninth #5 Reece Goetz; 20.011, tenth #22 Shawn Rice; 20.087, eleventh #4 Greg Middendorf; 20.202, twelfth #97s Axel Walker; 20.283, thirteenth #15r Vern Scevers; 20.304, fourteenth #25z Chris Schmelzle; 20.308, fifteenth #91 Bryan Warf; 20.447, seventeenth #44 Todd Coleman; 20.693, eighteenth #94 Merv Barcelow; 21.195, nineteenth #33 Mitch Holte; 21.343, twentieth #2 Ron Larson; 21.363, and twenty-first #16 TJ Munro; 22.823.
The competitors had two practice sessions to get their cars attuned to the five-eighths oval. Both sessions revealed issues with some cars though no incidents on the track. The #44 had the braces on the left side of the front wing loosen letting the wing settle on the front tire creating smoke while on the track. That was quickly resolved in his pit. The #94 wouldn’t fire for the second practice which was traced to a broken wire in the magneto. The #25z was fighting issues believing during practice it was a timing issue ultimately being a failed head gasket. The #16 had continuous problems with their driveline preventing them from getting any real practice time.

STRONG SHOWING FOR NOEL DOWLER AT MOSPORT

 GARY GRANT PHOTO
TOD LEWIS REPORT
June 27, 2011.  In just his second NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race behind the wheel of the #5 EMCO Dodge at Mosport International Raceway, Noel Dowler Jr. of Sherwood Park, Alberta faced plenty of adversity and put in a strong showing and demonstrated plenty of poise and maturity.

Dowler’s first event in the #5 EMCO Dodge ended early with contact.  Knowing that getting as much time in the seat was essential the team hoped to use both practice sessions and qualifying to allow the young man to get as comfortable as possible in his first trip to the challenging course near Bowmanville, Ontario.

Rain sprinkles hampered the first practice session on Saturday afternoon and during the second round of practice Dowler made a mistake that countless drivers before him have also made.  “I got a little bit wide in corner two and got the wheels onto the grass” explained Dowler.  The result because of the wet grass was that the car slid into the tire barrier and caused significant right side damage to the #5 EMCO Dodge.  “I hate it for the team because there’s a lot of repair work to be done” he added.

With Dowler himself helping wherever possible the #5 EMCO Dodge team stayed very late Saturday to complete repairs.  Further rain showers cancelled the qualifying session and Dowler would have lined up 13th for the race, but due to the nature of the repairs Dowler would forfeit his starting spot and move to the tail end of the field.

Prior to the start of the race Dowler listened to some very good advice from his Crew Chief.  “He told me to try and just complete laps” said the driver.  “If I just finish the race that would be like a win.  It’s hard to drive that way, it goes against your natural instincts but I understood the point he was making” said Dowler.

Knowing he still has plenty to learn in his jump up to full size stock cars Dowler heeded the advice and drove the #5 EMCO Dodge cautiously from the start.  “It really felt good to finally spend some time on the track trying to improve with each lap” said Dowler.

Dowler would continue to work hard throughout the afternoon and his lap times in the #5 EMCO Dodge continued to improve.  So did his position during the race.  “After a while we were inside the top twenty and things were going pretty well” said Dowler.

The #5 EMCO Dodge team and Dowler’s progress continued to improve for the rest of the afternoon along with his position and Dowler accepted the checkered flag and was scored a satisfying sixteenth place result.  “We finished the race which was the first goal, we were on the lead lap, and I just found out my last lap was my quickest of the day” said Dowler.  “I can’t thank all the guys enough for all their hard work to get the car repaired.  We definitely took a step forward today and that was important for everyone” he added.

The next event of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule for Noel Dowler on Saturday July 9th as the feature race of the day during the Toronto Indy Weekend.  Dowler will participate in a total of five road and street course events, along with the two oval track races at Motoplex Speedway in Vernon, BC and Auto Clearing Speedway in Saskatoon for a total of seven races.  All of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races will be broadcast on TSN.  Check local listings for times in your area.  For more information about Noel Dowler Jr. log onto www.apollomotorsports.ca

Purdy had been leading from lap 1, but #48 Rob Ryan spun him out on the very last corner. Ryan received a black flag, giving the win to #98 Pat brown. #53 Kevin Noble finished 2nd and Purdy managed to finish 3rd.

The Old Timers made their first appearance off the season on Saturday. #1 James Campbell set fast time in qualifying with a time of 16.402. #24 Roger Beck won the B dash, and #25 George “The Jet” Jensen took home the win in the A dash. #12 Ron Simpson led up until lap 9, but #35 Kail Beck finally finished off his pass in the final corner, taking the win. #09 Joe Dardengo led the reverse heat from start to finish, taking the win. Aumen started pole for the reverse heat and spread his lead from there, winning his first race of the evening. The 20 lap feature saw Vincent prove his dominance once again, taking the lead on lap 1. A caution on lap 12 tightened the field, but Vincent would not give up his lead. Vincent led every lap in a main event that only took 6 minutes and 10 seconds to complete. Aumen finished 2nd, and 3rd went to #91 Darren Yates.

#55 Jeff Bird also set a track record on the evening. Bird set an amazing time of 14.653 in qualifying. #28 Wayde Heckford took the win in the Lite C dash. The B dash went to #34 Duane Zeinstra, who was filling in for Paul Verhagen for the dash. #25 Chris Root took home the win in the A dash. Bird managed to make his way from the very back to take the win in the Lite B heat. #43 Matt Verhagen held the lead in the A heat for the first 8 laps, but # 52 Jesse Dardengo managed to take the lead on lap 9 to take the win. The Lite B reverse saw #27 Frank Mayell lead for 4 laps, but once again Bird made his way from the back to take the lead and the eventual win. #28 Wayde Heckford held the lead in the A reverse heat for the first 5 laps, but #47 Richard Lejeune took away the lead on lap 6 to take the win. The 35 lap feature saw #15 Eli Ross hold the lead for the first 2 laps. #86 Ron French took over the lead on lap 2 and held that lead for 14 laps. #52 Jesse Dardengo eventually caught French and took the lead on lap 18. #55 Jeff Bird was coming on strong but mechanical issues caused him to withdrawal from the race. Dardengo would spread his lead from there and hold on to take the win. #8 Robbie Haslam finished 2nd, and #47 Richard Lejeune finished 3rd.

Fans Beat On Car For Charity - Agassiz Speedway

By Kris McKenzie

On the second annual racing for the cure cancer fundraiser there was hard hits on and off the track. During the intermission fans and drivers got together in front of the grandstand to take out some aggression ( and raise some money for cancer research) on a pink painted car. Some highlights from the festivities was the first up, a young fan, took out the front passenger window to cheers of the fans watching. Another person that got the crowd cheering was driver Troy Globe, who several times jumped up on the hood and pounded his way through the roof creating  a custom sunroof. Big thanks for all the donations from fans and drivers.

In the street stocks Warren Kurry in the 12 and B heat winner Kelly Moto in the 48 led the field to the green. Moto Would take the point on lap 2. The first yellow would fly on lap 6 when the 25 of Howie Webb found himself turn around, the 8 of John Chatwin and the 44 of Keith Tourand would also become involved but all would continue. The yellow would come out for a 2nd time for debris bunching the field up and putting the hard charging Murray Jones in the 28 on the back of the 8 who had taken the lead a few laps earlier. On the restart several good battles would develop. Out front the 8 28 44 and x of Paul Tourand fought for the top spot while further back the 6 of jessie Bridge and the 92 of Russ Luke had a good battle. In the end Lap traffic would pin the 8 on the bottom while all three other front runners would go by on the high side. Jones would take the win followed by Paul and Keith Tourand in 2nd and 3rd. The A heat went to the 55 of Trent McArthur.

The Focus midgets where next up On the pace lap outside pole sitter James Pirie slowed in one and would need to be pushed to the pits, he would unfortunately not make the call. On the start the 55 of Billy Bell out braked the 77 of Jeramiah Franklin in to one and took the lead. He would be followed by the 11 of Troy Globe (heat race winner) and the 41 of Kris McKenzie. The 46 of Steve Hora would make a quick shot to the pits after his car popped out of gear. He would return to the race several laps down. As the field spread out the fans where entertained by a great three car battle up front. Bell held the point with Globe pressuring on every turn, who in turn was pressured by McKenzie. This would be the way they ran until with two to go Bell would slip half a lane up, opening the door for Globe down the back stretch, who would take advantage and pick up his third win of the year. This was also the debut of young rookie Brayden Planko in the 00 who made continuous improvements all night.

The hornets saw the 11 of Matt Ostermeier and the 15 of rookie Liam Bell lead a 20 car field to the green, they would find themselves battling for second though as veteran driver Gary Radford in the 29 would spilt them going in to one and take the lead. The 15 would then find himself looking the wrong way in three when the field bunched up. The first yellow would fly when the 25 of Jack Striker spun in turn one. On the restart the 61 of Robert Adams would go high on the 29 for the lead,  he would be followed by the 6 of Dean Bridge. Deeper in the pack a great battle was going on between the 49 of Alex Thorley and the 53 of Neil Stratford, unfortunately the 53 would end up slowing in one with a broken axle, ending his night and bringing out the yellow again. On the restart the The 41 of Curtis Williams who had been making a steady climb through the field made his way past the 61 and took the lead and eventually the win. In the dying laps a great display of driving can from the 15 who made impressive moves on several cars showing that he will soon be a force to reckon with.  Heat race winners where Adams 61, Darren Barrett's 19, and Andrew bodnar's 22.

The Minis where the headliner of the evening. The heat races saw local crowd pleaser Wayne Goodwins 94 take the b heat. The A heat saw the 51 of Billy Beasley take a wild ride into the turn 3 wall. This was due to an attempt at going three wide with visiting island drivers Gil Parenteau (62) and Alex Mouner (96), contact was made resulting in the 51's night being finished. Aaron Willison in the 41 would end up with the win. The Main saw the 94 lead the field to the green. Going into 3 the field would bunch up resulting in the 62 spinning and bringing out an early  yellow. The 41 would continue his dominance at Agassiz taking the lead on lap 11, he would not look back.  The battle would be for the 2nd spot between the 94 96 and 50 of Norm Hillert. Goodwin would hold point until lap 28 when he would slide high and fall back to 5th. The field would calm down through the half way point until a mix up with the 50 62 and 77 of Jeremy Waxell which sent the 50 to the pits. The race would end with the 41 taking the chequered followed by the 96 and Marius Dunford in the 2.

The final class of the night would be the season debut of the hit 2 pass cars. The action stated before the cars even got to the start finish line with all drivers looking for someone to turn. Among the action some of the highlights where a chain reaction hit involving the 53, 174, and 42. And in the dying laps when the 24, 42, 420, 08, 55 and 53 awarded the crowd with a massive pill-up in turns 3 and 4. In the end the 174 was announced the winner to the cheers of the crowd.

KENNINGTON WINS AT MOSPORT

June 26, 2011.  Castrol Edge Dodge driver DJ Kennington’s season is officially back on track following round four of the2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Mosport International Raceway.  Following a third place finish at the last event Kennington scored his first win of the season on the famed road course near Bowmanville, Ontario and jumped to third in the overall point standings.

The weekend began under misty skies on Saturday where a damp track limited the number of on track laps and cancelled the qualifying session.  By rule the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge would line up fourth on the starting grid.  “We didn’t get a lot of laps because of the weather but the car felt good so we used our best guess on the set up for a dry and warm race day on Sunday” said Kennington.

When the 200km event began Sunday afternoon Kennington mixed it up with the front runners but as always gave each of his challengers plenty of racing room.  “I would have liked to have led a lap earlier but I also wanted to pace myself and make sure our car was good for the end of the race” explained the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge driver.

Kennington along with Crew Chief Dave Wight had set up a strategy before the race that they would make a necessary pit stop for fuel when the window opened to allow them to go the rest of the distance and assess the tire situation.  During the second caution period of the day the team made the stops.  “The caution came out at the right time and we got our fuel” said Kennington.  “The rest of the front runners came for tires so we did as well and we knew that now we were ready to go the distance” he added.

During the middle portion the race Kennington continued to spar with the rest of the leaders kept the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge continuously inside the top-five.  “We still had a long way to go so I still didn’t want to push things too much” he stated.

Following the last caution period Kennington restarted the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge in third position.  And from his position he could see there might be an opening before the race concluded.  “The #84 and the #66 were fighting pretty good and I kept looking for a chance to grab another spot” he stated.

With the #84 car with his close friend J.R. Fitzpatrick leading Kennington moved the #17 Castrol Edge Doge past the #66 with only a couple of laps remaining.  “I knew J.R. wasn’t going to give me much but I got a good run on him and when he was a little wide in corner eight I slid up inside” said the driver.

The victory was far from assured as Fitzpatrick immediately sought to retake the lead.  Kennington ran the final laps perfectly and was first to the checkered flag to claim the win for the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge.  “It’s so great to finally get this first road win in NASCAR” said Kennington.  “It was a lot of fun racing with J.R. all day.  We’re such good friends and we race each other hard but fair and that makes the win really special.  It’s great for Castrol Edge, Mahindra, Hitachi Power Tools and all our sponsors that help us out so much” he stated.

DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team return to action during the Toronto Indy weekend on the streets at Exhibition Place July 8 & 9.  Once again this year fans will be able to watch all twelve races on TSN.  You can watch DJ Kennington race to victory at Mosport on Saturday July 2nd at 1:30PM.

Races End With A Bang - Western Speedway

By Ken Keating

Western Speedway presented a comprehensive show tonight with the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, and the Bomber Series racing in Trophy Dashes, Heat races, and Feature events sponsored by Galaxie Motors. As well as the racing, it was also Elton John night with an Elton John look-a-like leading several kids, big and small, to Crocodile Rock and an Elton John karaoke. To further the night's event, Mr. Dizzy completed a car jump into a four tier stack of cars then took part in a van explosion. Kaya Hunter, an accomplished singer, opened the event with the Star Spangled Banner and Oh Canada and then joined Chahala Leanne Boise as a Trophy Girl to present trophies to the night's race winners.

Aaron Camron won the Trophy Dash in the Bomber Series, Aason Baker won the Demo Car Dash, George Haywood took the Demo Truck Dash, while Cam Wilkinson was victorious in the Figure 8 Trophy Dash. Jamie Morgan and Giles Cyr won the Bomber Heat races, Kirk Peacey and Steve Miller won Heat races in the Demo Car Series, George Haywood won the Demo Truck Heat race, and Sean Welch and Kyle Rizok took the Figure 8 Heat races.

Jeff Foley and Ashton Campbell shared the front row for the start of the Figure 8 Feature event with Foley taking the lead for the first four laps. Blaine Duperreault grabbed the lead on lap five with Foley still trading the lead for the next couple of laps. On lap eight, Doug Richens made his way forward to take over the lead with Foley and Duperreault still in contention. Richens stayed in the lead until lap seventeen when he got taken out allowing Sean Welch to go by and into the lead. Over the next several laps Cam Wilkinson and Richens tried to mount a challenge but the laps ran out and they would finish with Welch taking the win followed by Wilkinson and Richens in another hard fought Figure 8 race.
Fourteen cars took to the track led by Daniel David and Bill Lushaw for forty laps of racing in the Bomber Series. On lap three, Giles Cyr grabbed the lead followed quickly by Troy Tarbuck, driving for Dennis Stewart, Jamie Morgan, and Brandon Steen. On lap twelve, Tarbuck went by for the lead dropping Cyr back to the second position. On lap twenty-two, the front runners were starting to run into serious lapped traffic and on lap twenty-four Morgan was able to follow Tarbuck through a hole and grabbed the second spot quickly followed by Heath Cooper moving to third sometimes racing three wide. With lapped traffic still a factor, Cyr got caught on the outside and Steen went by and into the fourth spot as Cyr began to drop off the pace. On lap thirty-two, Cooper made the pass and moved up to second and Steen found a hole and passed Morgan as well and into the third spot. On lap thirty-nine, Steen passed Cooper and took over the second spot and followed Tarbuck as he crossed the line for the chequered flag. Cooper, Morgan, and Cyr rounded out the top five positions.

Barry Morrison held the pole for the start of the Demo Truck Feature event and was quickly passed by George Haywood after the second lap. This race featured several flat tires and take-outs but on lap five, Kevin Knight grabbed the lead followed by Richard Milne. Over the next several laps Knight was able to stay out of trouble and take out lapped trucks and still maintain the lead. He would go on and win his third Demo Truck Feature of the year followed by Milne and Dustin Dash driving the #16 truck to a third place finish. Kevin said at Victory Square: Where can you have this kinda of fun taking out two trucks including the old man (his father Bruce) in the Suburban".
Kenny Baker and Joe Liberatore shared the front row for ten laps of racing in the Demo Car Series. Spencer Nicholls and Larry Manson gave up the vans and entered the Demo Cars as Kirk Peacey and Marc Parkinson also returned to race this night making a field of eleven cars. Tyler Clough grabbed the lead after just two laps followed quickly by Peacey and Liberatore. Right from the drop of the green flag in the Trophy Dash, there seemed to be a cat and mouse game with several drivers involved and the Feature would be no different. On lap nine, Clough checked up as he was about to take out a lapped car and several other drivers checked up as well and this allowed Parkinson to blast into the lead and go on to the win followed by Peacey and Liberatore. Eight cars entered a total destruction event and after some great hitting and hard knocks Johnny Earl came away with the trophy in this event keeping his car quite mobile and inflicting punishment on his fellow competitors.

Mr. Dizzy (aka Mike Buse) brought his "Combined Chaos" team from Munroe Washington to perform a four tier car jump and explosion to Western Speedway on this night. Mike Buse is veteran race car driver and has had much success in auto racing. Mr. Dizzy was born, raised, and still lives in Monroe. His son Wylee (aka Dizzy Jr) is a huge part of this team and is part of the joint stunts originally done with his dad. This year Mr Dizzy has brought on the Crusher and they have become one of the hottest act out there. The Crusher (aka Josh Beckel) buckled up in his car as crews assembled the ramps and stacked four cars on top of one another as well as a few catch cars to be used as a cushion. Given the green light, Josh hammered the car to about sixty to sixty-five mph and slammed into his target three cars up the tier. The sheer force pushed his target forward several feet while the fourth highest car literally was thrown close to two-hundred feet down the track while Beckel done a couple of nose flips and settled down on the roof. Crews quickly rushed to make sure the driver was OK and much to the delight of everyone in the stands, he exited the crushed Ford unhurt and narry a scratch. This team was not finished. After the conclusion of the Total Destruction event, Josh and Wylee entered a van rigged with about ten pounds of dynamite and gasoline. Once given the green light, they set off the charge igniting the gasoline into a huge fireball and quickly exited the van again unhurt and unscathed raising a big cheer from the appreciative crowd and ending this program with a bang.

The next event, at Western Speedway,  is the Wednesday Night Hornet Series sponsored by Steve Copp Construction scheduled for June 29th. The next regular night of racing is the Stock Cars, Mini Stocks, and the WilRoc Lites Series scheduled for July 2nd and sponsored by Richlock Rentals.
