DEREK ROBERTS MAGICAL SEASON

(Snohomish, WA) 9/26/11 by Kelly Hart – Racinghartmedia

Over the years very few rookies have won Championships at the high-banked 3/10th mile clay oval at Skagit Speedway. In 2011 Derek Roberts of Snohomish, WA accomplished just such a feat. With the highest car count of any division and plenty of competition night in and night out, winning a Sportsman Sprint Championship is demanding of preparation, perspiration and a little luck. The #42 Roberts Racing team did just that this year.

How do you build a championship season? How about 14 top five finishes which included 3 wins, 2 second places, 6 thirds, two 4ths and one 5th place. The lone fifth place finish was the lowest the car finished all year. Included in the final point total was 5 heat race wins plus passing points and the only two times the division timed in both nights were fast times. Plus the car completed every lap of every race this season.

Roberts Racing would like to thank our sponsors who helped make this season possible. They include Onshore Exploration Corporation, Bardahl, the Haddelands, Pacific Roast Coffee, Burlington Collision,
@KevinHamlin, DeYoung Incorporated, Powder Coaters Inc., Central Welding Supply and Shark Racing Engines.

We cannot thank enough our fabulous crew members who donated their time and effort to make sure we had the race car in perfect shape every time we hit the track. To those dedicated guys we extend our heartfelt appreciation for your every effort this season. Without you this season championship might not have happened. Additionally, we would like to thank our families and friends. Your support of our hobby and our dreams is a gift.

Demo Series After Championships

By Ken Keating

The Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Bombers, and Mini Figure 8's will be after Championships Saturday night, October 1st, at Western Speedway with the event sponsored by Galaxy Motors. Greg Sagmoen only has a forty-six point advantage over Troy Tarbuck in the Demo Car Series and Sagmoen would like to retire as a Champion as he says he will not return next season. Kevin Knight has a forty-nine point advantage over George Haywood and has driven in many different Series and would love to have a Championship to add to his resume. He has been a force to reckon with since driving a Paul Scotthorne owned Demo Truck winning several Feature events in 2011. Haywood is the defending Champion and would love to have another. The Figure 8 Series has three drivers in the thick of the points battle with Kyle Rizok, Ashton Campbell, and Rhett Szevics separated by only thirty-four points. This one could be interesting between these three drivers. Four drivers are very close in the Bomber Series with last year's Champion, Brandon Steen holding the top spot but has Dennis Stewart, Jamie Morgan, and Aaron Camron all within striking distance as 1st to 4th are separated by sixty-four points. They not only have to race one another but also have to stay over the twenty second lap time while doing so. A DQ in any race could spell disaster if you want to claim a Championship.

The last time here, Chris Stone won the Bomber Trophy Dash, Richard Milne was the winner in the Demo Truck Dash, Troy Tarbuck won the Demo Car Trophy Dash, and Marie Haywood picked up the win in the Figure 8 Series. Milne made three wide racing with Kevin Knight and George Haywood going through turn one in this Dash. This is rare for the Demo Truck Series.

Kail Beck was the winner of the Figure 8 Heat race, Richard Milne picked up another win in the Demo Truck Series Heat race, Greg Sagmoen was the winner in the Demo Car Series Heat, while Chris Broughton and Mark Lockhart were victorious in the Bomber Heat races. The Demo Truck Heat proved costly as Shawn Hansen plowed into the wall on turn three and his night was finished on lap four. Points leader, Kevin Knight also suffered lots of damage along with Paul Scotthorne as these trucks could not come out for Feature event racing.

Kail Beck and Kyle Rizok shared the front row for the start of the Figure 8 Feature event with Rizok getting the lead for the first lap and then lost to Beck for the next three. On lap five, Rizok went back to the lead and held that for two laps when Beck regained that position. Andrew Buchanan moved into the second position with Rory Smith moving into contention two laps later. On lap fourteen, Smith moved into the second position while Rizok, Cam Wilkinson, and Marie Haywood battled behind him. On the last lap, Dan Baluch and Wilkinson collided hard at the crossover while Beck took the chequered flag. Smith and Haywood rounded out the top three positions. Beck said: I really wanted to win this race and winnings will be donated to the Cops For Cancer Tour."

Chris Pollard and Craig Holfeld had the front row for the start of the Demo Car Feature event with Holfeld grabbing the lead very early. On lap five, Marc Parkinson moved into the second position with Bryce Muir taking third. On lap ten, Parkinson took over the lead, a position he would hold for the chequered flag. He was followed by Holfeld and Muir rounding out the top three positions.

Doug Richens had the pole for the start of the Demo Truck Feature event with only four trucks able to make the call. Kenny Baker, George Haywood, and a very fast Richard Milne made the field with Milne looking for a clean sweep. He did not make up too much ground until the final corner when he was able to catch and push Richens around and took the lead and the win. Haywood hung on for second while Richens made the third position.

Eighteen cars lined up for the start of the Bomber Feature with Bill Lushaw and Andy Riddoch on the front row. Just as the Feature was about to begin, rain began to fall and would have an impact on this race. Riddoch got out to the early lead followed by Mark Lockhart and Teresa Johnson. On lap seven, the yellow flag came out as Brian Wakelin lost a wheel and went off the track in a hail of sparks on turn one. On the restart, Chris Broughton got control and went into the lead while Riddoch and Jamie Morgan traded the second position back and forth with Lockhart and Brandon Steen in a tight group as well. On lap twelve, the yellow came out again as Lockhart and Heath Cooper got together sending Lockhart to the pits. Cooper had damage on his car but could continue. On the restart, Broughton got the lead again but now had Steen and Jarrod Sagmoen, driving the #18 car, on his tail. On lap fifteen, Steen dove to the inside of Broughton and made a clean pass for the lead. With the rain still falling, officials dropped the laps to seventeen as Steen drove to the victory followed by Broughton, Sagmoen, Giles Cyr, and Andrew Wilson rounding out the top five positions.

Saturday night also is the last regular race of the 2011 season. We must congratulate each of the Champions in all the Series racing at Western Speedway as they deserve and have earned their respective titles. A heartfelt thank you must be extended to all that help put on a great season of racing at Western Speedway, to all of the many sponsors as, without them, racing would not be without difficulties, and to you, the many fans that support the great sport of auto racing. We look forward to seeing you back for the 2012 race season. Thank you all.

Aaron Wilkie Returns To Victory Square

By Ken Keating

The final curtain came down tonight for the I.M.S. 4 Mini Stocks, the Old Time Racers Association, and the Stock Cars for the 2011 season at Western Speedway. There was a lot at stake as the Stock Cars were running for the Jerry Ferrie Memorial Trophy and the OTRA Series ran for the Hall Of Fame Trophy on Championship night for the Stocks and Mini Stocks.

Trophy Dash wins went to Giles Parenteau and Matt Szauer in the Mini Stock Series, Joe Dardengo and Larry Joyce in the OTRA Series, and Aaron Wilkie and Dan Myers in the Stock Car Series. Joe Dardengo used the last lap to slip by Ron Simpson for the win in the OTRA Dash winning by a very narrow margin. Heat race wins were recorded by Matt Szauer and Alex Mouner in the Mini Stock Series, Larry Joyce and Joe Dardengo in the OTRA Series, and Dave Reside and Aaron Wilkie in the Stock Car Series. Dardengo and Tom Cinnamon battled side by side for several laps in the OTRA Heat race before Dardengo finally got the win. The Stock Cars tried racing three wide going through the corners and that didn't work and Jeremy Gardiner got the worst of it breaking an axle and wound up well off the track in turn four as there was some contact between the drivers.

George "The Jet" Jenson was on his way to Western Speedway to race with the OTRA Series and as he passed the Loghouse Pub, he lost his transmission in his personal pickup. Some good samaritan came by and stopped to see what happened and just happened to have a chain with him. He pulled George, the broken down truck and trailer along with the #25 race car to the parking lot at the Speedway knowing George was planning on racing. They unhooked and thanked the owner for the assistance, but he got away before anyone could get a name. George and his wife would very much like to extend a further heartfelt "thank you" to this individual as without his help George may not have made it to the race track to compete. It is pleasant when you hear or see there is still good people in this world willing to extend a helping hand.

Glen Percival and Giles Parenteau shared the front row for the start of a twenty lap Feature event with the I.M.S. 4 Mini Stock Series. Jeremy Waksel had the lead after five laps and quickly had Alex Mouner falling into the second spot. By lap nine, Mouner took over the lead with Waksel in second and Percival running third. Sharon Constantine dropped out early and Caleb Van Bree drove to the pits on lap twelve. Once in the lead, Mouner built up a good lead and the best race on the track was with Percival and Justin Woodske for third and fourth. Mouner went on for the win followed by Waksel and Woodske gaining the third spot on lap seventeen. Mouner stated he was very pleased with his season as he captured another Feature event and successfully defended his I.M.S. 4 Championship winning  his second consecutive title.

Kail Beck and Stephen Dardengo had the front row for the OTRA Feature event scheduled to run twenty-five laps. By lap six, Joe Dardengo had the lead followed by Beck and Tom Cinnamon. Just a couple laps later, Cinnamon took over the second spot and James Campbell moved up to run third. On lap nine there was a massive pileup that included pretty close to the whole field as it was the front runners that spun out. Everyone checked up and got stopped before any major damage was done to any of the cars, but it resulted in a yellow flag. On the restart, most everyone was caught sleeping as the starter dropped the green flag and Campbell got a great jump and grabbed the lead with Beck running in second. Campbell started to check out on the rest of the field as Larry Joyce closed in to race with Beck taking the second spot on lap sixteen. On lap twenty-one, George Jenson moved up to the third spot but no one could catch Campbell as he took the chequered flag and the Hall of Fame Trophy. Larry Joyce placed second followed by Jenson, Dennis Morneau, and Duane Zeinstra rounding out the top five.

The Stock Car Series was scheduled to run seventy-five laps and they were introduced on the frontstretch with Aaron Wilkie holding the pole position with Daryl Crocker on the outside. On lap five, the yellow came out as the #02 car spun around in front of the flag stand and everyone was able to avoid a collision. For the double file restart, Wilkie had Cody Aumen on the outside as the field came around to retake the green flag. Wilkie again got the lead and after a few more laps had Kyle Cottam running second as Ryan Wade moved up taking the third spot from Crocker. On lap fourteen, disaster struck the #95 car of Wade's as he backed way off the pace and headed for the pits with a blown drive shaft. Wilkie continued to lead with Cottam right on his back bumper and Crocker still in the mix. On lap twenty-one the yellow came out again as Sagmoen went around in turn one and backed into the wall. He might have had some help in the spin out. On this restart, Wilkie had Larry Graham on the outside but by lap twenty-four, Wilkie again had the clear lead with Cottam still close. Graham, Crocker, and Garrett Smith were in a tight battle for the third, fourth and fifth spot. On lap thirty, the yellow came out again as Dan Myers spun out. On this restart, Cottam again chose the outside with Wilkie on the front row. Wilkie got away again and went back to the lead. The yellow again came out and this time Smith chose the outside restart position along with Wilkie as the field took the green flag. Wilkie again got the lead followed by Smith and Cottam running second and third and Graham still in the hunt. On lap fifty-five the yellow came out again as Smith went around on turn one from a light touch from Graham. On this restart, Wilkie had Dan Myers on his outside. The race was only a couple laps under the green when the yellow came out again as Smith went around and hit the wall on turn four. On the restart, Wilkie had Crocker back on his outside but quickly took the lead. On lap sixty-one, Wilkie had Cottam running in second with Crocker still holding the third spot. Cottam got up to run side by side with Wilkie for several laps and on lap sixty-eight, Wilkie slipped just enough for Cottam to get a clean run and take over the lead. On lap sixty-six, Graham took the third spot from Crocker. When the chequered flag dropped it was Cottam crossing the line first as he came around to stop in Victory Square. It was here that the win was for naught as his car was found to have an illegal tire thus resulting in a DQ and handing the victory to Aaron Wilkie. Larry Graham, Daryl Crocker, and Mike Derepentigny followed for the next positions.

Wilkie was handed the Jerry Ferrie Memorial Trophy by members of the Ferrie family and the Feature event Trophy by Elsa Josionek and Carolyn Fortune, the Western Speedway Trophy Girls on this night. With this victory, Wilkie completed a clean sweep on his return to racing.

Ryan Wade became the first driver to win five consecutive Championships in a row in the Stock Car Series as he basically had to just qualify his car to become the Champion for 2011.
Western Speedway will close out racing for 2011 on Saturday, the 1st of October, as the Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Figure 8s, and the Bombers run on their Championship night with a couple of titles still up for grabs.

TOP TEN FINISH AT KAWARTHA FOR JASON WHITE

 TODD LEWIS PHOTO

September 25, 2011.  Racer Jason White and the #21 A & W Dodge team had suffered some tough blows in the last couple of races in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.  As they arrived at Kawartha Speedway for the final event of the 2011 season the team was determined to end the year on a high note.

As the manager for Kawartha Speedway, White’s Crew Chief Derek Lynch has the advantage of knowing the subtleties of the track and that helped in the set up of the #21 A & W Dodge.  “All through practice the car was really consistent” said White.  “I felt very confident heading into the race with the way the car was feeling” he added.

White began the 250 lap race from the 16th position and began making his way forward in the #21 A & W Dodge.  “The car just came alive in the race” said White.  “It was handling really well and I started to gain a few spots” he added.

As the race progressed the #21 A & W Dodge team continued to run strong.  “We made our pit stops for tires and fuel and had a little help that the caution flags flew at the right times, but we were on the lead lap for the whole race and at the end the car was a real contender” said an enthusiastic White.

With several caution periods over the final 50 laps the field was tightly bunch and White wanted to ensure that he secured a solid finish for the #21 A & W Dodge.  “We were running eighth and I was thinking there at the end with a green, white, checkered finish we might be able to push for another spot or two” explained White.  “But I just made sure to keep the car together and take the good finish” he added.

The #21 A & W Dodge would take the checkered flag with an eighth place finish, his fifth top ten finish of the season.  “What a finish” enthused White afterwards.  “After the last couple of weeks we really needed that one.  And with it we secured eighth in the championship” said White.

With the end of the season White reflected on the year overall.  “We accomplished our goals this year” said the #21 A & W Dodge driver.  “We were competitive at every event and we finished the year in the top ten in the championship.  This new partnership with Derek Lynch and the Kawartha Group, working with Doug Kennington horsepower and once again having such tremendous support from A & W Canada.  We really grew as a team and I’m excited about 2012” he added.

Race fans will have even more opportunities to follow Jason White and the #21 A & W Dodge Challenger team this season.  Check out the all new team website at www.jasonwhiteracing.com and be sure to follow Jason on twitter for the latest updates @racinjasonwhite  The 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will consist of twelve events from coast to coast in Canada.  Get more information about the series at www.hometracks.nascar.com

Kennington Wins Race; Steckly Takes Title

NASCAR Canadian Tire Series wraps up season at Kawartha
By Kevin W. Green, NASCAR
September 24, 2011 - 7:48pm
FRASERVILLE, Ontario, Canada – D.J. Kennington took the win in the Kawartha 250 on Saturday to become the first two-time winner at Kawartha Speedway, while Scott Steckly wrapped up his second NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship with a runner-up finish.
Kennington - last year's series champion, who scored his previous win at the .375-mile track in 2009 - held off Steckly in a green-white-checkered finish as the series capped off its fifth season.
J.R. Fitzpatrick charged back after losing a lap in the pits to battle Steckly in the closing laps and finish third. Kerry Micks took fourth, with Mark Dilley in fifth. Sixth was Don Thomson Jr. Steve Mathews, who won his first career series pole in qualifying earlier in the day, recovered from a spin to finish seventh and was the top finishing rookie. Jason White, Jeff Lapcevich and last year's race winner, Pete Shepherd III, completed the top 10.
The victory marked Kennington's second win of the year and the 11th of his career, putting him in a tie with Steckly for second on the list of career series victories. The driver of the No. 17 Castrol Edge Dodge, from St. Thomas, Ont., came into the final event trailing Steckly by 94 points. Although he was quickest in practice, a slip in qualifying put him 10th on the starting grid. He initially took the lead from Fitzpatrick on Lap 70 and was out front for 20 circuits. Kennington later chased down Shepherd and passed him to take the lead for good on Lap 167.
Although he built a lead of more than three seconds, that margin was erased by a late-race caution that brought about the green-white-checkered finish.
Steckly was able to wrap up the 2011 championship early in the race, needing only to finish 25th or better for the title. The Milverton, Ont., driver started the race in fourth and kept his No. 22 Canadian Tire/MotoMaster Dodge in the lead pack throughout the race. He was on Fitzpatrick's back bumper with 20 laps to go and managed to get by for second at the finish.
Meanwhile, Louis-Philippe Dumoulin clinched the Rookie of the Year title with a 16th-place finish at Kawartha. He came into the place with a 1-point lead in the rookie standings over Isabelle Tremblay, who finished 20th.
The Kawartha 250 will premiere on TSN at 12:30 p.m. ET on Sat. Oct. 15 with a special 90-minute show.

Lemley, O’Brien, Moss and Abenroth Crowned Season Champions at Deming Speedway

9/24/11

Week in and week out, the drivers of Deming Speedway fought, scratched, and clawed to get their race cars to the track to put on the best Mini Sprint show in the Northwest on a weekly basis. When the dust settled on the 2011 season on Saturday night, four drivers stood triumphant in their respective divisions: Brock Lemley in the 1200s, Dustin O’Brien in the Speedmart / Hoosier 600s, Derrick Moss in the 600 restricteds and Isaac Abenroth in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints.

It was a rough weekend for Lemley in both divisions he competed in. In the 1200 division, Lemley took over the lead in the A Feature on lap 8 with a slidejob on Aaron Fell, and looked to be well on his way to victory when disaster struck in the form of his chain coming off. The points title was sewn up at this point for Brock, but the race lead was lost to Fell who finished his season with the win. Liam Ryan was second in the main and Jared Gunderson finished third. Ryan was the fast qualifier and Fell won the scramble. Ryan won the heat race.

Dustin O’Brien entered the night only needing to take a green flag to guarantee his points title in the Speedmart / Hoosier 600 division. The Snohomish native ended up doing much more than just taking a green, as Dustin capped of his 2011 year by winning the feature on Les Schwab Season Championship night. O’Brien inherited the lead when race leader Brock Lemley flipped in turn two after contact with the second place car. O’Brien who had been running third, inherited the point and ran way away from the field to pick up the W. Alex Gauthier finished a career best second and Hayden Schmidt was third. JR Thomas and Kelly Mauck ended their epic season long battle with Thomas winning the nightly battle, finishing fourth to Mauck’s fifth, but with Mauck winning the war, finishing third in points ahead of Thomas’ 4th. Shaun Holtorf set quick time. Heat wins went to Jerrod Saddler, Robie Price and Eric Drake. O’Brien won the scramble.

Derrick Moss needed to avoid a last place finish to hold on to his points title, and he did that and more with a 4th place finish in the feature. His nearest competitor, Austin Sheridan, led the first eight laps before spinning in turn two to cause a caution, handing the lead and win to Jacob Brown, who was driving a brand new car to him. Bill Mercer finished a career best second and Dougie James was third. Mercer set quick time. Ian Humphries and Kaitlyn Hammer won the heats. Sheridan won the scramble.

The closest race of the night in points was in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints where Isaac Abenroth led Eli Schmidt and Ashleigh Johnson by 14 and 15 points respectively. With the title on the line, Abenroth showed his championship caliber by leading all 20 laps of the A Main event and securing his first Deming Speedway championship. Eli was second and JJ Thomas took third. Jesse Schlotfeldt was quick time and won the heat race.

O’Brien Pads Championship Lead With Win @ Deming

With the points battle tight coming into the night, Dustin O’Brien created some much needed breathing room for himself in the Speedmart / Hoosier 600 championship chase with a main event victory on craft stove night. Other feature winners were Derek Holmwood, Derrick Moss and Isaac Abenroth.

Other than a little better time trial, the night could not have gone much better for O’Brien. Starting third on the A Main, O’Brien used the lapped car of Kyle Oman as a basketball style pick to help get around race leader Shaun Holtorf in the latter stages of the Speedmart / Hoosier main event to secure the lead and the eventual victory. The win, coupled with mechanical woes from second place in points Brock Lemley, gave O’Brien a _______ point lead going into Saturday nights championship chase. Holtorf ran second on his first night in the Speedmart / XXX house car, and Kelly Mauck was third.

It was a wire to wire win for Derek Holmwood in the 1200 division, as the Bellingham native led all twenty five laps of the feature on his way to the victory. Aaron Fell ran second but did not make up enough points to challenge for the championship, as points leader Brock Lemley finished third, virtually guaranteeing Brock the 1200 title.

Points leader Derrick Moss also made it easy on himself with a wire to wire win from the pole in the 600 Restricted division. Moss stretched his points lead over Austin Sheridan with the victory, also virtually locking up the points title. Hannah Lindquist was second and Rachel Westmoreland third.

The tightest of the points battles coming into tonight was the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints. Isaac Abenroth led the points going into the evening, and when the dust settled, he had stretched his points advantage to 14 and 15 respectively over Eli Schmidt and Ashleigh Johnson with a win in the main event. The top three in points finished 1-2-3 in the feature, keeping things tight going into the final night of racing.

With one night left, the points race in the Junior Sprints will be decided by the A feature on Les Schwab night on Saturday, as the aforementioned youngsters will go tooth and nail for Junior Sprint supremecy. Derrick Moss has a 31 point advantage going into the final night of racing in the 600 restricted class, which barring disaster, should secure him the title. Brock Lemley has sewn up the 1200 title with a 100+ point pad on Aaron Fell. In the Speedmart Hoosier 600 division, it will also take a disaster for Dustin O’Brien to lose his 98 point advantage over Lemley.

O'Dell Slinger Servcice Championship Night at Western Speedway

DOWLER SHOWS GREAT PROGRESS AT RIVERSIDE

September 18, 2011.  Sherwood Park, Alberta’s Noel Dowler and the #5 EMCO Dodge team continue to show great improvement during their rookie season in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.  During round number eleven at Riverside International Speedway Dowler worked his way forward and ran inside the top ten for a good portion of the race.  While he would slip back to eleventh in the closing laps Dowler once again gained valuable experience.

The #5 EMCO Dodge team worked to get the car handling to Dowler’s liking during the one hour afternoon practice schedule with mixed results.  “The car just wasn’t where we needed it to be at the start” said Dowler.

Despite the less than ideal handling car Dowler managed to qualify the #5 EMCO Dodge on the outside of row seven.  The 300 lap race would run under green flag conditions for better than 100 laps before the first caution period.  “I was able to get into a rhythm during the long run” said Dowler.  “But the car still didn’t handle very well” he added.

Throughout the race Dowler would show a determined effort with his #5 EMCO Dodge even though the handling left something to be desired.  “I was just doing my thing” said Dowler.  “Staying out of trouble and trying to do what I could with the car” said the driver.

Following a pit stop for adjustments Dowler continued his drive and began to improve his position on the track climbing into the top ten.  “It wasn’t my specific goal but I’m happy we got into the top ten for sure” said Dowler.

Another long green flag run to the end of the race would also hamper the #5 EMCO Dodge team.  Dowler would take the checkered flag eleventh.  “Our car just wasn’t happy during those long runs” explained Dowler.  “It would have been nice to finish in the top ten but we came up a bit short.  Everybody on the team worked really hard and I’m looking forward to making more progress next week at Kawartha” he stated.

The final race of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season takes place Saturday September 24 at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, ON.  All of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series races will be broadcast on TSN.  Check local listings for times in your area.  For more information about Noel Dowler Jr. log onto www.apollomotorsports.ca
