STEEN WINS SQUEAKER - WESTERN SPEEDWAY

Langford B.C., October 2nd, 2010

Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Mini Figure 8s, and the Bombers were on the agenda at Western Speedway as they will be on the last event of the season on October 9th looking for the Championships in each Series. The points entering tonight's program were fairly close as Brandon Steen led with 1007 points over Giles Cyr at 994 in the Bomber Series. Brad Smith had a one point advantage over Kirk Peacey in the Demo Car Series with 905 points to 904 points respectively while Richard Milne at 939 led Heath Cooper by eight points at 931 in the Demo Truck Series. Brandon Young had a comfortable margin over Cody Young in the Figure 8 Series. With the Championships looming ever so close you knew drivers would be driving hard on this night. That was evident when Dakota Hansen and James Young both got disqualified for agressive hits in a Mini Figure 8 Heat race.
The Mini Figure 8s had to run for forty laps with Dakota Hansen and Cam Wilkinson sharing the front row. At times the race looked more like a Total Destruction event as several cars suffered heavy damage and hard hits throughout. The remaining drivers had more of an obstacle course with all the cars that were disabled and sitting on the track. When the dust settled, Jeff Foley came out with the win.
The Bombers were scheduled to run for fifty laps for their Main event with Brandon Steen and Giles Cyr starting well back in the field. Jarrod Sagmoen got out to the lead early and had Daniel David to contend with over the first few laps while Chris Broughton ran third. David got by for the second spot after just four laps were complete while Steen and Cyr were trying to get away through the pack. Broughton then moved into the second spot while Steen had broken through to run in third and then on lap seventeen passed Broughton for the second spot. On lap twenty Steen caught Sagmoen and began a cat and mouse race for the lead as lapped traffic played a part. Several times Steen had to drop back as the two frontrunners tried to negotiate their way through back markers. After several laps of side by side and bumper to bumper racing, the track opened up a bit and Steen again moved to the outside of the leader and finally got the lead outright on lap twenty-eight. Once in the lead Steen began to run away and actually got a full straightaway lead on the field as Broughton, Chris Stone, and Giles Cyr battled for the next positions. Stone finally won that battle as he took over the third spot on lap thirty-seven. On lap forty-one, Mike Rutty spun out on the frontstretch bringing out a caution flag, the last thing Steen needed as he had such a big lead. On a double file restart, Steen got away clean again and had Sagmeon right on his bumper when the yellow came out again after just a half lap as Cyr and Rutty had problems in turn two. This time, for the double file restart, Steen had Stone on his outside for the green flag and he was first to get away and into the lead with Steen close behind along with Sagmoen and Broughton in that bunch as well. Stone seemed to have control for the most part as they again ran into lapped traffic going through turn one. Stone went to go outside as Jason Priddle went to move over for the leaders and those two touched as Steen dove to the inside and took over the lead going three wide. Over the remaining two laps or so, Stone kept the pressure on Steen but Steen managed to take the win by about a half a car over Stone with Sagmoen, Broughton, and Cyr rounding out the top five in a real squeeker. With one event left in 2010, Steen should have more of a buffer between himself and Cyr as they go down to the wire for the Championship.
Richard Milne had an ace up his sleeve for the Demo Truck Main event as Mark Keeler ran his truck for the #68 team on this night. Using all his skill and past Championship, Keeler kept his truck out front and got the win after taking out Heath Cooper with just a couple of laps remaining in this Feature event.
Chris Romkey and Joe Liberatore had the front row for the start of the Demo Car Feature event. Before the first lap was complete the #33 car wound up in the rurn one wall and Rompkey spun around. Before he could right himself, Bryce Muir had no where to go and slammed into the #65 car ending his night and he was not too happy with the hit. Keith Hanson grabbed the lead after just four laps followed by Craig Holfeld and Kirk Peacey. Hanson had a decent lead but relentless pursuit by Peacey put the two drivers bumper to bumper by the eleventh lap. One lap later Peacey pushed the leader around taking over the top spot and continued on for the chequered flag followed by Tyler Clough driving the #88 car, and Keith Hanson.

The next event will see these same Series invade Western Speedway when all the Championships are on the line and scheduled for October 9th. This will be the final regular races for 2010. After that the Steve Copp Construction sponsored Hornet winter schedule will take over with events on October 31st, November 21st, December 12th, January 16th, February 6th & 27th, with the final race on March 20th.
