DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Monday, December 13, 2010) - With the motto "We Build Champions," the American Speed Association is proud to showcase the 2010 Champions from the ASA Member Tracks and sanctioned Series. A total of 194 drivers won a championship at an ASA Member Track or a sanctioned series this season.
"This was an exciting year of racing within the ASA family," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "We have a great variety of champions this year and we congratulate all of them and wish them nothing but future success."
This season, the American Speed Association crowned champions on the national, regional and local level. Here are the highlights from this season.
BRYAN WORDELMAN - JOE GIBBS DRIVEN RACING OIL ASA MEMBER TRACK NATIONAL CHAMPION/WEST REGION CHAMPION
The 27-year-old from North Salt Lake, UT won the Maverik Modified track championship at Rocky Mountain Raceways, an ASA Member Track in West Valley City, UT this season. The track championship made him eligible for the national title. In 14 events, he had 10 top-five's and 12 top-ten finishes. Of those top-fives, five were a second place finish. He did win a 100-lap non-points event at the end of the season. In October, he flew to North Carolina and tried out for Joe Gibbs Racing as his prize for winning the national title.
DUSTIN RUMLEY - JOE GIBBS DRIVEN RACING OIL ASA MEMBER TRACK EAST REGION CHAMPION
Rumley came up 0.0028 points short of winning the National Championship. But the 21-year-old driver easily won the 2010 track championship at Ace Speedway this season in their late model division. He won the track title by 58 points over Jason Payne. He had three wins, 12 top-five and 14 top-ten finishes this season at Ace.
STEVE CARLSON - ASA MIDWEST TOUR
One of the most successful drivers in short track racing defended his ASA Midwest Tour championship this season. It is his 11th championship in his illustrious career. The West Salem, WI driver had one fast time, three wins, eight top-five's and nine top-ten finishes in eleven starts this season. He won the championship by 18-points over Chris Wimmer.
CHRIS MAREK - ASA MIDWEST SPORTSMAN TOUR
The Lakeville, MN driver put his name in the history books as the first series champion in 2010. In ten starts he had five fast times, four wins, eight top-five's and nine top-ten finishes. He won the championship by 43 points over Jay Kalbus.
JERRY WOOD - ASA MIDWEST TRUCK TOUR
The seasoned veteran from Sun Prairie, WI didn't have an easy way to winning the championship as his brother John was always on his back bumper. In eight starts, he had one fast time, three wins, and finished in the top-five in all of the events. His worst finish was third in two different events. He finished eleven points ahead of his brother for the championship.
JOEY LICATA - ASA TRUCK SERIES
The Lake Balboa, CA picked up three wins this season to defend his championship in the series that competes in the southwest corner of the United States. Not only did he have the three wins, but he also had three runner-up finishes and four fast qualifier awards.
ANDY ALBERDING - ASA NORTHWEST SPRINT CAR RACING ASSOCIATION SPRINT CAR SERIES
Not only is he the 2010 champion but he is also the President of the racing series as well. Alberding had a strong season to claim his second series championship. He ended Matt Hein's two-year reign as the NSRA champion. In fact, Alberding beat Hein by 21 points for the championship.
BILLY BALOG - ASA INTERSTATE RACING ASSOCIATION OUTLAW SPRINTS
Billy won his third championship in a row in the Midwest based Outlaw Sprint series. He won the championship over Scotty Neitzel by 377 points. Balog claimed his third consecutive series title by winning 8 A-mains and putting together an incredible streak of 23 consecutive top 5's finishes.
DANNY BAGWELL - ISCARS DASH TOURING SANCTIONED BY ASA
The veteran driver had a dominating season in the series that runs along the southeast of the United States. Bagwell won the championship by 180 points over Todd Hawkes with 10 wins and 13 top-five finishes in 13 starts.
NEIL ALBERICO - ASA BONDURANT CHAMPIONSHIP RACE SERIES
Alberico was in a close battle for the championship with Jamie Slone. In fact, they tied and had to go to a tie-breaker. With Alberico having more wins over Slone, he won the 2010 championship. He collected ten wins in 16-races he participated in.
14 CHAMPIONS - ASA PROAUTOSPORTS
The ASA sanctioned road course division recently wrapped up their 2010 season by crowning 14 division champions. This year's champions are: Bobby Hillis (GTO), Bryan McCormick (GTU), Frant Root (PS0), Robert Dopp (PS1), Carl Scott (PS2), Jay Horak (PS3), Jere Clark (PS3), Rich Stokes (PS4), Rick Elliot (CSR), Jens Ploughmann (EFF), Mike Williams (FC), Kelly Gallant (FM), John Fitzgerald (FST), Connor Pyle (LGD).
