Hannum Tops 54 Car 600 Field on Night One Clay Cup Nationals Deming Speedway

By Kaleb Hart

Ryan Wins First Career 1200 Main

7/21/11 - Two youngsters picked up main event wins on Preliminary night #1 of the 2011 Clay Cup Nationals at Deming Speedway. Brad Hannum bested the 54 car field in the 600 division and Liam Ryan took his first career 1200 win with a late race pass.

In the 600 class, Brad Hannum and Phil Schemenauer waged an epic war for thirty laps in the A Main. With Schemenauer bird dogging him around the track in the low groove, Hannum had his right rear tire virtually scraping the clay off the fence for the first 24 laps of the 30 lap A Main. Following a red flag for Derek Torkelson, the Hannum crew made a strategic call on their setup, altering their car to roll the bottom during the open red. The move paid off for Brad, as on the restart, he pinned Schemenauer behind him and blocked his groove en route to picking up his first Deming Speedway win in the Pace Chassis #13h. Michael Faccinto raced from deep in the field to pickup second place in the last few laps. Schemenauer was the lone Washingtonian on the podium as the Stanwood native took third. Torkelson was the fast time qualifier on the night. Heat race wins went to Nate Vaughn, Jacob Brown, JR Thomas, Faccinto, Derek Holmwood and Lance Sargent. Brandon Turner won the C feature and Heath Duinkerken won the B.

Liam Ryan put on quite the show in the 1200 class, completing his run from 17th to the front on lap 28 with a low pass on Eric Turner entering turn three. The Langley, BC native and his crew nailed the setup and Liam drove away from Turner to pick up his first win in the 1200 division on the Thursday preliminary night of the 28th annual Clay Cup Nationals. Turner would hang on to second and Duane Mackey picked up third. Aaron Fell set quick time on the night and heat race wins went to Clennon Holloway, Steven Hendrickson and Tyson Cross.

Michael Faccinto was the top point scorer on night one in the 600 class, followed by Dustin O’Brien, Brock Lemley, Heath Duinkerken and Hayden Schmidt. In the 1200s, Liam Ryan scored the best on night one followed by Brock Lemley, Aaron Fell, Duane Mackey and Jared Gunderson.

Night two of the 28th annual Clay Cup Nationals kicks off on Friday night at Deming Speedway, with the gates opening at 5pm, Time Trials at 6p and Racing at 7p. If you can’t make it to the track, listen to the live call of the races 100% free of charge online at
