Young Couple Wins Big at Deming Speedway

By Kaleb Hart

The Boyfriend / Girlfriend tandem of Rachel Westmoreland and Reece Goetz were big winners on Les Schwab night at Deming Speedway. Westmoreland won her first career feature in the 600 Restricted division while Goetz returned to victory lane in the 600 Open class. Other feature winners included Brock Lemley in the 1200s and Ashleigh Johnson in the Junior Sprints.

Westmoreland’s quest for her first Deming Speedway victory finally ended on Friday night, as the young lady passed Seth Cooper on the inside of turn two on lap 10 en route to her first career win at the 1/6 mile clay oval. Westmoreland held off Derrick Moss and Austin Sheridan to score the victory. Moss set quick time. Hannah Lindquist, Cooper and Alden Ostrom won the heats.

Former Clay Cup champion Reece Goetz shook off the rust that plagued him over last week’s Clay Cup and returned to his championship form, dominating all 25 laps of the Speedmart Hoosier 600 Open main event. Dustin O’Brien set quick time and ran second, with Brock Lemley taking third. Heat wins went to Lemley, Brandon Turner and Liam Ryan.
5 time Clay Cup Champion is on a roll in the 1200 division after leading all 25 laps of the A Feature. Lemley also set quick time. Aaron Fell made a late run on Brock but had to settle for second. Jared Gunderson was third. Heat wins went to Steven Hendrickson and Derek Holmwood.

Ashleigh Johnson gave her mom quite the birthday gift by winning her fourth feature of the year in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints. Isaac Abenroth finished one position out of a clean sweep, taking second after setting a new track record and winning his heat. Eli Schmidt was third and Sawyer Sorgenfrei won the other heat.
