Week in and week out, the drivers of Deming Speedway fought, scratched, and clawed to get their race cars to the track to put on the best Mini Sprint show in the Northwest on a weekly basis. When the dust settled on the 2011 season on Saturday night, four drivers stood triumphant in their respective divisions: Brock Lemley in the 1200s, Dustin O’Brien in the Speedmart / Hoosier 600s, Derrick Moss in the 600 restricteds and Isaac Abenroth in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints.
It was a rough weekend for Lemley in both divisions he competed in. In the 1200 division, Lemley took over the lead in the A Feature on lap 8 with a slidejob on Aaron Fell, and looked to be well on his way to victory when disaster struck in the form of his chain coming off. The points title was sewn up at this point for Brock, but the race lead was lost to Fell who finished his season with the win. Liam Ryan was second in the main and Jared Gunderson finished third. Ryan was the fast qualifier and Fell won the scramble. Ryan won the heat race.
Dustin O’Brien entered the night only needing to take a green flag to guarantee his points title in the Speedmart / Hoosier 600 division. The Snohomish native ended up doing much more than just taking a green, as Dustin capped of his 2011 year by winning the feature on Les Schwab Season Championship night. O’Brien inherited the lead when race leader Brock Lemley flipped in turn two after contact with the second place car. O’Brien who had been running third, inherited the point and ran way away from the field to pick up the W. Alex Gauthier finished a career best second and Hayden Schmidt was third. JR Thomas and Kelly Mauck ended their epic season long battle with Thomas winning the nightly battle, finishing fourth to Mauck’s fifth, but with Mauck winning the war, finishing third in points ahead of Thomas’ 4th. Shaun Holtorf set quick time. Heat wins went to Jerrod Saddler, Robie Price and Eric Drake. O’Brien won the scramble.
Derrick Moss needed to avoid a last place finish to hold on to his points title, and he did that and more with a 4th place finish in the feature. His nearest competitor, Austin Sheridan, led the first eight laps before spinning in turn two to cause a caution, handing the lead and win to Jacob Brown, who was driving a brand new car to him. Bill Mercer finished a career best second and Dougie James was third. Mercer set quick time. Ian Humphries and Kaitlyn Hammer won the heats. Sheridan won the scramble.
The closest race of the night in points was in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints where Isaac Abenroth led Eli Schmidt and Ashleigh Johnson by 14 and 15 points respectively. With the title on the line, Abenroth showed his championship caliber by leading all 20 laps of the A Main event and securing his first Deming Speedway championship. Eli was second and JJ Thomas took third. Jesse Schlotfeldt was quick time and won the heat race.
500cc cage karts ran with Deming Speedway on Saturday night, with Austin Mann winning the main and setting quick time and Devin Barnes winning the heat.
