Two in a Row for Torkelson at Deming Speedway

9/16/11

At the end of a fantastic night of racing, Derek Torkelson stood triumphant in victory lane with his second straight victory in the 600 division on Speedmart / Hoosier night at Deming Speedway. Other feature winners were Aaron Fell, Brayden Planko and Eli Schmidt.

The opening laps of the Speedmart Hoosier 600 class A Main were extremely memorable, with your top three positions running so close that you could have thrown a blanket over them. Alex Gauthier led the first 16 circuits with Derek Torkelson and Liam Ryan right in behind him, challenging him in both the high and low grooves. On lap seventeen, despite sustaining some front wing damage, Torkelson powered by Gauthier on the inside of turn two to take the lead which he would not give up en route to his second straight feature win. Gauthier would fade back and Ryan dropped out due to damage. Brock Lemley battled his way to second and Cam Smith was third. Ryan set quick time and won the first heat race. Other heat winners were Brandon Turner and JR Thomas.

Aaron Fell and Brock Lemley turned Deming Speedway’s 1/6 mile clay oval into Slide Job City during the 1200 A Main. Fell streaked out to an early lead that was eaten up due to a lap 12 caution. On the ensuing restart, Lemley began the parade of slide jobs with a bonsai move into turn one that brought him the lead. The two would trade slides and crossovers until lap eighteen when Fell would find the drive to complete a slide out of two and gain some breathing room as Brock missed the corner exit. From there, it was Aaron streaking to the win, with Brock dropping back to third behind Jared Gunderson. Gunderson and Lemley would do battle over the closing laps, with Brock taking runner up honors back from Jared in the closing circuits. Steven Hendrickson and Brad Davison won the heats. Derek Holmwood was fast time.

Brayden Planko never makes it easy on himself in the 600 restricted division. Starting in the seventh position, Planko had to race his way past a very fast five cars before coming up on race long leader Jacob Brown with 5 laps left. With Brown running the middle groove on the track, Planko squeezed his car through a narrow opening off turn four on lap 23 to take the lead and the win, followed by Brown and Austin Sheridan. Kyle Mitchell was the fast qualifier. Heat wins went to Brown, Sheridan and Spencer Constance.

The pole position suited Eli Schmidt nicely on Friday night, as he parlayed his up front starting spot into a 15 lap wire to wire win in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints. Ashleigh Johnson overcame a mother load of adversity through the night to bring her car home second and JJ Thomas was third. Lynden Lebedinski and Schmidt won the heat races. Johnson set fast time.
