Eric
Drake knows the value of timing. Friday night racing at Deming Speedway
was sponsored by Diehl Ford, a long time supporter of Drake racing.
With his sponsor in the grandstands, Drake put his car in victory lane
in the 1200 division after a bold move to take the lead on lap nine.
Other feature winners included Chase Schmidt, Jake Helsel and Jesse
Schlotfeldt.
Starting
on the inside pole position, Drake followed Clennon Holloway early in
the 1200 feature, looking for his opportunity to strike. That chance
came on lap nine, as Holloway followed a lap car in low through turn
two. Drake took a big chance, putting his right side tires over the
cushion on the high side of two, looking for grip. The grip he was
searching for was there, and Drake powered off the corner around Clennon
to take the point which he would not relinquish until crossing under
the checkered flag for his first win of the 2012 season. Holloway was
second and Aaron fell took third. DJ Kosa set quick time. Heat winners
were Steven Hendrickson, Jared Gunderson and Fell.
Chase
Schmidt was dominant for 23 of the 25 laps in the Hoosier / Speedmart
600 main event. The two laps he didn’t utterly dominate were 24 and 25,
as Derek Torkelson and Brock Lemley ran right up to the young Canadian
driver’s rear nerf bar. To his credit, Schmidt maintained his composure
and ran the same lap he’d been running, which paid off with a feature
win. Torkelson and Lemley were second and third respectively. Schmidt
set quick time. Liam Ryan, Brandon Turner, Lemley and Austin Sheridan
won the heat races.
Jake
Helsel won a highly entertaining 600 restricted division feature. After
taking the lead on lap three from Rachel Westmoreland, Helsel led a
lead pack of cars that ran some 12 cars deep into the back pack of 7
cars. Once they hit the lappers, the lead pack diced and sliced, from
nose to tail, bumper to bumper in between the lappers without taking
each other or seriously impeding each others line. Helsel navigated the
slower cars with the skill of a grizzled veteran, taking his first win
in the division by a solid margin after making his way back into clean
air. Westmoreland ran second and Austin Sheridan, who was your fast
qualifier, finished third. JJ Thomas, Spencer Constance, Helsel and Ian
Humphries won the heats.
Jesse
Schlotfeldt was dominant again in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints.
Schlotfeldt went from fourth to first on the first lap and ran away from
the field to win his second straight feature. Ashton Dial ran second
and Bradley Parks finished third. Schlotfeldt set quick time. Sawyer
Sorgenfrei and Tyson Lemley won the heats.
