The Action Heats Up At Western Speedway

George Wade

This Saturday Night at Western Speedway, O’Dell Slinger Service presents The Keg Steakhouse & Bar Late Model Driver Challenge, the Richlock Rentals WILROC Non Wing Sprint Cars and the Island Series Stock Cars. This will be the opening race for all three classes at the fast 4/10ths paved oval in Langford.

The Keg Late Models will run Twin 50 lap main events on Saturday Night, this will be the first of four race nights at Western this season that will see the Twin 50 format.  Series organizer’s Steve Copp, Bill Smith Jr., and Daryl Crocker have been very busy in the off season securing a ten thousand dollar year end points fund, that will be paid out to the top ten in points at year end. This should produce one of the most competitive Late Models seasons in many years at Western, headlining the drivers that are slated to compete include last years Late Model Champion Jason Terasenko from Vancouver, along with Victoria drivers, Wade Bland, Rory Smith the 2010 Late Model Champion, Brandon Carlson, Darrell Midgley, and Vancouver’s Harvey Hogenboom who will share driving duties in his car with Victoria’s Gary Smith.

The Richlock Rentals WILROC Non Wing Sprint Cars look forward to a banner year as car count is expected to reach the 18 to 20 count several times this year. This class continues to grow in these tough economic times with a strict set of rules and regulations that allow a top quality car that  can be run on a limited budget.  Victoria’s Jesse Dardengo will be back to defend his championship in the potent Scotty Sprinter along with team mate Chris Root from Sidney, other drivers expected to fight for the championship include Victoria drivers Deter Lejeune, Ron French, the father and son team of the Verhagens, Paul and Matt, Robbie Haslam, Shawnigan Lake’s Jeff Bird  and up island drivers Lance Wade, Mark Stewart, Wayde Heckford and Shane Woolcock.

The Island Series Stock Cars will make their 2012 debut Saturday Night, leading the way will be five time and defending Champion Ryan Wade,  it is unclear at this time if Wade will be able to defend his championship as he has work commitments in the interior.  Former series Champion Brian Clutchey is back after running a limited schedule the past couple of years, last year’s runner up Daryl Crocker looks for a good year as he hopes to debut a brand new car on Saturday Night.  Others expected to fight for the championship include 2011 Rookie of The Year Cody Aumen from Duncan, Victoria drivers Dave Reside, Kyle Cottam, Brandon Hutchison, Mike Derpentingy and Chris McInerney, along with Ladysmith’s Dan Myers.  A good group of Rookie of the Year contenders  include 2011 Bomber Champion Brandon Steen in the ex Aaron Wilke car, 2011 Demo Truck Champion Kevin Knight and Rhett Smith.

The next event at Western Speedway will be Saturday May 26th for The Q Princess and Pirate Night that will feature Fireworks, the popular Boat Race along with Demo Car and Truck action, Bombers and Mini Figure 8’s.

The front gates open at 4:30 pm, qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 6:30 pm.
