SUN SPLASHED RESULTS FROM SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

(Alger, WA)  5/12/12 by Kelly Hart

The hottest day of the year couldn’t compare to the heat coming from the racing action in the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series at Skagit Speedway. With daytime temperatures into the 70’s and a full field of race cars in the pit area race fans flocked to Skagit Speedway Saturday night to see a great night of racing.

Fast time for the 410 Sprints was point leader Travis Jacobson at 11.686. Liam Ryan and Mitch Olson won the heat race wins. A wild 410 main event saw three lead changes with Ryan leading the first 4 laps before giving way to Eric Fisher. Fisher ran off to a big lead before losing power and shutting down on the front stretch. That handed the lead to Travis Jacobson who had been rapidly closing. For Jacobson it was his second win of the season.

Fast time for the 360 Sprints was point leader Trevor Turnbull with a 12.024. Heat race wins went to Alan Munn and Reece Goetz. First time visitor to Skagit Speedway TJ Hartman led 24 of the 25 lap 360 main. An impressive battle with Alan Munn for the first 22 laps before Munn left with a flat right rear. Hartman led the first 17 laps and the last 7 laps with Munn leading lap 18. On the 18th lap Munn smacked the front stretch wall as he crossed the line just inches in front of Hartman. Hartman was holding on and would get the lead back never giving in to the pressure while Munn started losing air pressure and fighting an ill handling car.

In the Sportsman Sprint cars Ashley Lewellen won her first ever sprint car heat race in the first heat, with last week’s main event winner Dylan Dunham and Roger Oudman. The story of the main event was Cory Swatzina. Since moving up from the Outlaw Hornets a few years ago Cory has ran most of the races and not been fortunate to find winners circle. Tonight he did leading all 20 laps of the feature for his first ever sprint car main event win. He did so in a brand new to him car, put together with late nights all this week after totally his other car last weekend.

The Outlaw Hornet feature was a battle of the team cars of Greg Hibma and Cliff Ballenger. Ballenger led the first 9 laps then Hibma took over the lead for the rest of the way. Heat race wins went to Bren FUtrelle and Matt Ploeg.

Racing returns Saturday night May 19th at ASA Member Track Skagit Speedway with sprint cars and hornets seeing action.
