Rain almost cancelled an eventful night at Saratoga Speedway on Saturday.

By Terry Guest

The Crash to Pass cars, Hornet cars, Figure 8's and Roadrunners were all on the racing card on Saturday, highlighted by a huge oil spill, and the seasons first roll over.

#66 Nick Leavitt led the Roadrunner division championship by 18 points over #59 Ted Dimitrov going into Saturday, but with 2 out of 3 races won by Dimitrov, he now holds the the points lead going into the next race night. Dimitrov set fast time in qualifying with a time of 19.048. #17 Dan Kemp who ran into mechanical problems later in the night, won the only dash for the roadrunners. Dimitrov battled Leavitt in the heat, but eventually came out victorious. 3 cars took to the track for the 12 lap feature; Dimitrov took the lead early and never looked back from there, dominating the other 2 cars to win his 2nd main event win of the year. Leavitt finished 2nd with 3rd going to #25 Andrea Cannon.

The Figure 8 cars brought out 5 cars on Saturday. For all who don't know, this class has been added on to the schedule on every night that features Crash to Pass, Hornets and Roadrunners. #15 Cindy Kennedy had a great night, winning the dash, heat and held of her boyfriend #31 Tom Dunn to win the main event. This class is an up in coming class that is great for anyone looking for inexpensive, fun racing.

The Crash to Pass made their 4th appearance of the year on Saturday. #01 "The General" Jeff May set fast time in qualifying with a time of 18.771. #66 Billy Brimacombe Jr. won his second straight B dash, with the A dash going to #8 Brad Kotscherofski, which was his first dash win of the season. all 10 cars took to the track for the 12 lap heat, but on lap 1, #7 Jamie Pinto and #37 David Cates got tangled up in turn 2, causing Cates to end up on Pinto's hood. Later on in the heat, #40 Cam Edward laid down 3 thick strips of oil all around the race track, causing a very slick track, but #72 Travis Stevenson managed to race his way through to take the win. A 20 lap feature would see #73 Sheldon Hopp take the lead on lap 1 and lead for the next 14 laps. A popcorn yellow on lap 13 diminished Hopp's lead, putting Stevenson right on his bumper. Stevenson would eventually take out Hopp and would lead from that point on, winning his 2nd main event of the year. #40 Cam Edward took 2nd, with 3rd going to Hopp.

The Hornet cars made their 3rd straight appearance at Saratoga Speedway. On behalf of the racing community, I would just like to take a quick second to send many wishes to the Phillips family, who were absent on Saturday to attend a family funeral. In lighter news, #02 Daryl Cahill set fast time in qualifying with a time of 18.117. Also in qualifying, #35 Blaire Mark was the maker of our first roll over of the year. Blaire came very hard out of turn 4 and smashed into the tires, flipping him over. The driver would be alright, but the car was done for the evening. #64 MacLaren Inglis won the B dash, with the A going to #08 Daryn Cahill. #28 Brianne Fenn took the B heat, which was her first heat race win of the year; #08 Daryn Cahill fought his way from the back to win the A heat. 25 lap were given for the feature race; #01 Kevin Lawrenuk race a great race, taking the lead on lap 3 and he never looked back from there, battling his way through lap traffic to win a great green, white chequered race. Daryn Cahill took 2nd, with 3rd going to brother Daryl Cahill.

Extra laps... Next weekend's racing will be sponsored by North Island College, and will be featured by the I.M.C.A Modifieds, Dwarf cars, Bomber cars and the Motorcycles. #72 Stewart Lee hold a slim 26 point lead over #29 Gilles Cyr going into next weekend, with #98 Bobby Cyr not far behind, only being 67 points back. #00 Bart Smith holds a comfortable 85 point lead over #44 Tim Openshaw. Our "Eve of destruction" is coming up on June 30th. This night will feature our first Crash to Pass boat race of the year, which is one of our most popular events all season. An amazing limo jump, and the biggest Firework show ever will also be featured on the night. The Hornet cars and Roadrunners will round out the night of racing, so make sure to mark your calendars for this great night and many more this season.
