The Keg
Steakhouse & Bar Late Model Drivers Challenge Series in conjunction
with Western Speedway and O’Dell Slinger Service have created the Rick
O’Dell Memorial Race, the inaugural event will be held on July 20th .
With the growth of the Series and Late Model racing on the Island, we
thought it fitting, that we honor one of the great race car drivers ever
to come out of Victoria. The race will be in memory of the popular
Victoria who passed away in 2006.
Rick started racing at Western in
Stock Car division in 1966 and was named Rookie of The Year. He won the
first of his two Super Stock Championships in 1971 and repeated in
1972, Rick was also named the Most Popular Driver 5 years in a row from
1970 to 1974. In the later 70’s and 80’s Rick raced all over the West
Coast running the NASCAR Winston West and NASCAR Northwest Series as well as many Open Comp races.
The Series will run four events in 2013, May 18th, June 22nd, July 20th
and Championship Night on September 21st. The Canada 200 on the Labor
Day long weekend will also be a point’s race for the series.
In 2013
the $10,000 points fund again will be divided up equally between the
top ten in points, with each driver taking home $1,000. To be eligible
for the point’s fund, drivers must compete in all five race night
events.
The race format will once again consist of group qualifying, heat races and main events.
