This weekend Western Speedway hosts one of the biggest event of the year with the 42nd running of the prestigious Daffodil Cup for NSRA/WWST Winged Sprint Cars. Longtime sponsor P&R Western Star will once again be the title sponsor of the oldest Sprint Car race that is run in Canada. The winner of the Daffodil Cup will be the driver who accumulates the most points from Friday and Saturday nights. Friday Night the NSRA/WWST will run for the Denny Rand Memorial. The WILROC Non Wing Sprint Cars will be in the action for both days and run for the Kershaw Cup on Friday Night. The Stock Cars and the OTRA Old Timers are also scheduled with the OTRA running The Ron Mayell Memorial.
Started by the “Daffodil King” Victoria’s Geoff Vantreight, the inaugural event in 1961 was won by Edmonton driver Eldon Rassmussen. Since that time some of the best Sprint Car drivers in Canada and the US have won the prestigious race, including Indy 500 veterans the late Billy Foster Victoria, Colorado’s, Jim Malloy, and Idaho’s Davey Hamilton. The late Roy Smith and Duncan’s Scott Aumen lead the list of winners with four wins each, Aumen is the defending Champion. Three time winners include the Montgomery Brothers Trevor and Jeff along with Norm Ellefson from Spokane.
The combined NSRA and WWST Daffodil Cup will bring the best Winged Sprint car drivers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and British Columbia together for a stellar field of the best Winged Sprint car drivers on the West Coast. Roseburg’s Andy Alberding leads the NSRA Point Standings and Meridian’s Johnny Geisler the WSST Point Standings, Geisler who has run all the events for both Series only trails Alberding by 6 points 442 to 336 in the NSRA points. The 2011 NSRA Champion and last year’s Daffodil Cup Winner Sierra Jackson from Middleton, Idaho sits in fifth position in both the NSRA and WWST, 345 and Jackson with 313. Other out of town drivers confirmed are winner of the last NSRA Event at Evergreen Speedway Matt Hein from Roseburg, Brian Warf from Bosie, Idaho, Ryan Burdett from West Jordan, Utah along with Washington drivers Todd Coleman, Randy DuBois, and Greg Middendorf. Local driver’s include four time Scott Aumen from Duncan, Jeff Montgomery, Matt Mansell, Darren Yates, Paul Verhagen, Ron Jay, Guy Barrett and 2012 Western Speedway Late Model Champion Wade Bland . Other BC drivers include Nick Wood from Kelowna and Ron, Rich and Chase Larson from Quesnel.
The WILROC Non Wing Sprint Cars should have a strong field of cars lead by points leader Mark Stewart from Campbell River, Stewart with two wins so far leads another two time winner Mike Haslam by 29 points 610 to 581, 2012 champion Jeff Bird from Shawnigan Lake sits only 2 points behind Haslam at 579. Dwayne Zeinstra holds down fourth with one win and 511 points, followed by Lance Wade with 2 wins and 492 points.
The OTRA Old Timers will be in action both nights and will be running for the Ron Mayell Memorial Trophy on Saturday Night. The Island Series Stock Cars leaare d by points leader Daryl Crocker with 1206 points followed by Shane Scott with 1139, Dave Reside 1135, Kevin Knight 1081 and Brian Clutchey with 1078.
