The Keg Steakhouse & Bar Late Model Driver Challenge Gears Up For 2014
The 2014 Keg Steakhouse and Bar Late Model Driver Challenge is ramping up to be another great year of racing at fast 4/10th mile paved oval at Western Speedway. The series had a banner year in 2013, there second full season that saw 24 drivers from the Island and lower mainland take points, in a highly contested championship battle. Victoria’s Geoff Morris captured the 2013 title on the strength of three victories in the eight race Series, edging his brother Brent by 21 points 749 to 728, Rory Smith finished third also had three main event wins and finished one point behind Brent with 727 points. Fourth and fifth were only separated by one point as well, with 2012 Keg Champion Wade Bland edging out Darrell Midgley 655 to 654, Bland also had one feature win, with the other win going to Jason Teresanko. The series averaged 16 cars a night, and had a high of 20 for the July race.
The Series will again run four dates that will feature the popular Twin 50′s format, the series kicks off the 2014 season on May 31st, followed with June 21st and July 19tth dates. Championship Night will see something totally different as event will be run on Saturday August 30th in conjunction with the Reg Midgley Canada 200. This year in an attempt to create an action packed Labor day weekend of Late Model racing, the Saturday night will consist of a regular Keg Twin 50 format, and on Sunday the Canada 200 will be run. If all the races through-out the year run as expected with no rain outs this will be the final race for the Keg Series. This is a great opportunity for the Keg Twin 50’s to act as a practice for the 200 and for non-regulars to experience our exciting format. Drivers choosing to participate in both nights of racing will get MORE than 300 laps of competitive racing!
In a effort to keep the costs down, for the third consecutive year, the Series Directors have chosen not to change any of the rules. There will be some minor clarifications, but the basic Series rules will remain unchanged for 2014.
The Keg Steakhouse and Bar will return as the title sponsor for the third consecutive of the Series, as well as J&L Consulting (Jason Tarasenko) OK Tires (Saanichton), Steve Copp Construction and Kustom Pro Drywall. The directors continuing to work hard hard to secure the return of the 2013 sponsors as well as pursuing new partners to contribute to our year end points fund, and Race night giveaways.
As we move on to our 3rd year we are hoping that racers, sponsors and teams will come out and support this series again in 2014, and we want to thank everyone who has run with us in the past. We feel that this is a great series running at Western Speedway and look forward to seeing you next season.
