Opening Night At Saratoga Speedway

By Terry Guest

Opening night of racing at Saratoga Speedway saw many new faces, and some great racing. With a racing card of Crash to Pass, Hornets, and Roadrunners, the racing did not disappoint!

Just like the 2010 season, the Crash to Pass class had a great car count of 8. Last years champion; #2 Glenn Pinto was sporting a new car this season, but ran into mechanical problems half way through the night. A wet track caused for slower times in qualifying, with fast time going to #72 Travis Stevenson with a time of 18.933. During qualifying, our track “dare devil” #13 Tom Dunn flew over our big bus jump, carrying over his legacy from last year. The dash went to #72 Travis Stevenson. The heat saw #13 Tom Dunn take over the lead on lap 3 and he never looked back from there. The 20 lap main event saw #8 Brad Kotscherofski take the lead early. A caution on lap 7 diminished Kotscherofski’s lead over the pack. Even though the field tightened, Kotscherofski spread his lead out once again and led the rest of the way, winning the first main event of the 2011 season for the Crash to Pass class. 2nd place went to #72 Travis Stevenson, and 3rd to #7 James Fleming.

The Roadrunner class had many new faces on Saturday. Last years champion #28 James Buchanan decided to give his ride to his son Andrew for the 2011 season who did not disappoint. Fast time went to Andrew who posted a time of 20.421. The dash was also won by Buchanan. The heat saw the only rookie in the class; #25 Andrea Cannon start on the pole. Andrew would soon find himself in the lead once again and hold it for the rest of the race. The 12 lap main saw #10 Allias Parker, who had not raced all night, join into the main event. Buchanan led 9 laps until Allias took over the lead on lap 10. Parker would find a way to hold off Buchanan the rest of the way and win the first main event for the Roadrunners this season. 2nd would go to Buchanan and 3rd to #19 Weston Lane.

Thirty-one cars took to the track for qualifying in the Hornet Class. Unlike last year, cars were able to paint their cars whichever color they like, which made for some great looking cars on opening night. Like In the Crash to Pass and Roadrunner classes, qualifying was affected by the rain with fast time going to #57 Corey Sanderson with a time of 18.612. The D dash went to 12 year old Nigel Neufeld. The C dash went to #17 Brad Dimitrov, racing in his second season. The B dash went to another rookie; #91 James Nesbitt. Finally the A dash went to #13 Jason Fraser. The D heat saw #59 Ted Dimitrov take the lead early and lead for the rest, taking the win. The C heat saw #14 Kyle Fallowfield lead for 7 laps until #10 Bernard Eberlein took the lead, and eventually taking the win. In the B heat, #09 Cameron Phillips led for most of the race until his younger brother Brandon took over the lead on lap 7 taking away the win from his older brother. The A heat saw #13 Jason Fraser lead from start to finish. The 25 B main saw 5 lead changes. #98 Nigel Neufeld led for 2 laps until #17 Brad Dimitrov passed him on the outside, taking over the lead. Dimitrov would lead until lap 10 when #10 Bernard Eberlein took over the lead. Eberlein’s lead was short lived. #91 James Nesbitt took over the lead on lap 13. Nesbitt looked like he would take the win, but on lap 18, Nesbitt crashed into the tires, giving the lead back to Eberlein who would lead for the rest of the race. 2nd place went to Nesbitt and 3rd to #17 Brad Dimitrov. The 35 lap A main saw #01 Kevin Lawrenuk take the lead on lap 1. Lawrenuk held that lead up until lap 18 when #57 Corey Sanderson took over the lead. On lap 19, Sanderson got into an altercation giving the lead back to Lawrenuk who would not look back from there, taking the win in the first A main of the season. 2nd place went to #13 Jason Fraser, and 3rd to Sanderson.

Extra Laps…Next week will be the first appearance for the Bomber cars, I.M.C.A Modifieds, Motorcycles and the Old Timers.
