Metcalfe Breaks Long Draught with Narrow Win at Deming Speedway

By Kaleb Hart

It’s been a long hard road back to victory lane for Frosty Metcalfe at Deming Speedway. On Midseason Championship Night presented by Les Schwab, Hawley’s Auto Supply and 92.9 Kism, Metcalfe ended a 6+ year drought by scoring a victory in the 1200 division much to the delight of the huge crowd and many of his competitors. Other feature winners included Brock Lemley, Brayden Planko and Ashleigh Johnson.

In the 30 lap 1200 A Main, Metcalfe began his winning run by starting seventh and methodically working his way forward. The surface was ultra slick, leaving two distinct grooves low and high to race in. As is usual, Frosty had his car glued to the bottom, and it was evident early that it was a good choice. By mid race, Metcalfe had worked his way up into the top five and was reeling in the competitors ahead of him. A late race caution for third place running Liam Ryan that also saw fourth place Aaron Fell leave the track at the same time catapulted the veteran into third. With a late restart, Metcalfe picked off previous night winner Brock Lemley then set sail for race leader Jason Bloodgood. Making up a half second advantage over the final two laps, Metcalfe saw his chance when he pulled even with Jason entering turn three on the final lap. The ensuing drag race to the line found Metcalfe on top by a margin of .006. “I want to thank everyone who’s ever helped me over the years for this win. Each and every one of you. There’s so many…this is for you guys!” said the jubilant victor. Bloodgood and Lemley rounded out the top three. Lemley won the scramble Ryan was fast time. Frosty and Brandon Benson were heat race winners.

Brock Lemley made it three wins in two nights after taking the victory in the Hoosier Speedmart 600 division. Brock led every lap of the thirty lap main. The racing for second through fifth was incredible, with Dustin O’Brien and JR Thomas swapping second spot multiple times over about 15 laps in a classic high low battle, with O’Brien eventually winning out in the low groove. Thomas would fall all the way back to fifth before a last lap pass put him just behind Chase Schmidt who ran third. Schmidt was quick time. JR won the scramble. Heat wins went to Schmidt, Liam Ryan, Jason Bloodgood and Spud Allen. Derek Holmwood won the B.

Many long time Deming fans remarked that the 600 restricted main was one of the best ever seen at the 1/6 mile clay oval. Brayden Planko won the 30 lap feature event that featured three different leaders and five lead changes. Hannah Lindquist led the initial ten laps before Austin Sheridan picked up the lead off the bottom of turn four. Lindquist and Sheridan engaged in an incredible back and forth battle that ended for good on lap eighteen with Hannah back on top. All the while, Planko had been picking his way forward from his ninth place starting spot. On lap 25, Brayden found room underneath Hannah to take the lead for good en route to his second feature win of the year. Robie Price rim rode his way around to a second place finish with Lindquist taking third. Robie was quick time and won his heat. Dylan Resch won heat two. Lindquist won the scramble.

Ashleigh Johnson has been on a rampage in the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprints, winning her third straight feature on Saturday night. Eli Schmidt and Isaac Abenroth engaged in a classic battle for second, with Eli ending up on top and Isaac taking third. Isaac won the scramble. Jake Helsel won the heat and Jesse Schlotfeldt was quick time.
