Sunshine and temperatures in the low 60’s greeted racers and
race fans alike at ASA Member Track Skagit Speedway on Saturday. Over twenty sprint cars, two
midgets, three Outlaw Hornets and a Dwarf Car graced the pit area for the first
of two Play Days at the track.
Drivers were turning great lap times in their practice
sessions with rookie Liam Ryan topping the speed charts with more than a few
laps in the 11.8 second range. Close to that time was Mike Melwicks with quite
a few 11.9’s and a handful of 11.8’s on the clock.
Other new drivers to the track were Matt Jensen, Zach
McCabe, Darcy and Shane Valliant in their sprint cars and Brandon Berg and Becky
Dahl in their Hornets.
Drivers and crews raved about the improvements to the pit
area which has been widened, lengthened and packed tightly with new crushed
rock making the surface flatter and less dusty. A new ramp and push off area
from the pits onto the track entrance in turn 3 also received great reviews.
Up on the fan side of things fans were treated to new and
improved concessions, freshly mowed lawns, power washed grandstands, and
sparkly clean restrooms waiting to enhance their race going experience.
Play Day 2 is scheduled for Saturday April 14th
starting at 1:00 p.m. with the pit area opening at 11:00 a.m. for racer load
in. Grandstand admission is free. The 2012 Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing
Series begins Saturday night April 21st at 7:00 p.m.
