Every year on Memorial Day Weekend race fans gather at
Skagit Speedway for the John Carroll Classic presented by Industrial Resources
Incorporated of Clear Lake, WA.. An evening of racing in the name of former
Skagit Speedway Sprint Car racer John Carroll. After opening ceremonies
including memorial laps for fallen racers and in honor of Big John racing
action was underway for the Sprint Cars , Outlaw Hornets and USAC Midgets.
Qualifying started the evening with fast time in the 410 Sprints
going to Jason Solwold at 11.439 seconds and Kenny Rutz in the 360 Sprints at 12.072.
In 410 Sprint action the heat race winners were Kevin Smith and
Trevor Turnbull. Eric Fisher came into the night as the point leader and left
the night the same way by picking up the 25-lap main event win. Fisher
celebrated his 27th birthday as well as the win. Jason Solwold and
Trevor Turnbull rounded out the top 3 finishers.
For the 360 Sprints the heat race winners were Michael
Harris and Trevor Turnbull. A few years back it was John Carroll who gave
Travis Jacobson his first full time ride in a sprint car and Jacobson paid it
back with tonights win as he led all 25 laps for the victory.
Sportsman Sprint heat race wins went to Clayton Sibley,
Roger Oudman and Steve Parker. The main event took awhile to get underway as
spins and collisions prevented a clean start the first few times. Once it got
underway Steve Parker took off with rookies Skyler Pawlowicz and Zach McCabe in
tow. Numerous yellows dotted the rest of the race but Parker held on for his
first win of the season.
Outlaw Hornet heat race winners were Matt Ploeg and Freddie
Vela. Starting from the front row with the invert of 4 Cliff Ballenger
dominated the Outlaw Hornet 17-lap main event. Ballenger beat fast closing
Tyler Ketchum and teammate Freddie Vela to the checkered flag.
Making their first visit of the 2012 season was the USAC
Midgets. The USAC Midgets are the newest racing division at Skagit Speedway to
be racing for a Season Champion. This was the first of four scheduled races on
the season. Garrett Johnson won the heat. In the main event Jared Peterson held
off a charging Johnson for the last 12 laps to claim the first ever USAC Midget
main at Skagit Speedway. Peterson beat Johnson by less than a thousandth of a
second at the finish line, side by side
up against the fence at the stripe.
Next week at ASA Member Track Skagit Speedway all three
divisions of Sprint Cars and Outlaw Hornets return for round 7 of the Foothills
Toyota Tundra Racing Series. Grandstands open at 5:30pm with racing following
opening ceremonies at 7:00pm.
